Abstract.Mirroring the global increase of registered cases of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL), this infection has become a growing public health problem in Brazil during the last several years. As the traditional approach to control employed by the governmental health agencies has failed to reduce the incidence and epidemic outbreaks of this illness, we propose a re-evaluation of the national strategy of intervention and monitoring. Our thinking is based on a series of spatio-temporal scan statistics of the west-central region of the state of Bahia covering the 11-year period from 1994 to 2004. By analyzing the situation, spatially and temporally, we show that the disease is a not only a growing focal threat but that it is also appearing in the form of endemic clusters in the cities. The areas where the disease has been found have been classified according to the degree of risk of infection for humans and canines. The overall objective of this study was to identify areas of increased risk of AVL, including its seasonality, and to suggest ways and means to improve the detection of the disease. The findings presented here should not only be of interest for the efforts to control AVL in the study area but also be useful for developing control strategies in other endemic regions of Brazil.

Resistance-trained individuals can underestimate the intensity of the resistance training session: An analysis among genders, training experience, and exercises. J Strength Cond Res 36(6): 1506–1510, 2022—Resistance training (RT) promotes improvements in healthy parameters for young to elderly adults and athletes' performance. Strength and muscle mass improvements are dependent on exercise intensity. This study verifies whether 53 healthy young adults underestimate exercise intensity in 3 different exercises, such as bench press (BP), biceps curl (BC), and leg press 45° (LP). Researchers asked the subjects “How much load do you use to perform 10 repetitions in this exercise usually in workout routines?” in each exercise. Individuals warmed up and then performed as many repetitions as possible until they reached the concentric failure. Deviations from data normality were found by using Levene's test; the number of repetitions per exercise within sex was tested by using Friedman's test and Conover's post hoc and Kruskal–Wallis tests to compare the number of repetitions between sex and RT experience. We correlated the number of repetitions and training experience using the Spearman test. The number of repetitions for both groups (male and female) is greater than 8–12 repetitions for BC and LP and BP of the female group, except for men who perform around 8–12 repetitions on BP. Frequency of maximal repetitions reached for 8–12 repetitions for women was 12% for BP, 28% for BC, and 28% for LP. The frequency men reached was 46.5% for BP, 14.3% for BC, and 14.3% for LP. Training experience did not influence the number of repetitions reached. Resistance training practitioners underestimate exercise load (56% of total sample) to be independent of experience. Women underestimate exercise load more than men. Based on the present results, it is possible to state that RT should not be prescribed considering a predefined number of repetitions and a linked percentage of loads, without the guidance for frequent adjustments of loads, according to the exercise performed.

O objetivo do trabalho foi identificar se o conhecimento produzido na área acadêmica está sendo utilizado pelos profissionais do judô. Além disso, foi verificada a integração dos profissionais do esporte judô com os profissionais da área da ciência do desporto. Dezessete técnicos de judô do estado de São Paulo responderam um questionário elaborado especificamente para este estudo, o qual foi validado por 4 professores universitários da área de atuação relacionada a lutas ou judô. Os resultados mostraram que a minoria destes técnicos possui a graduação em educação física. Os participantes têm preferência pelos conhecimentos específicos do judô em detrimento dos conhecimentos das áreas da ciência do desporto e acham que o profissional de educação física seria o profissional ideal para a interação no desenvolvimento de seus programas de treinamento.

No Brasil, as inundações são o tipo de desastre mais comum e recorrente, provocando graves transtornos nos centros urbanos. Em Teresina, Piauí, as inundações são os mais recorrentes. Pretendeu-se com essa pesquisa, traçar o perfil socioeconômico da população vulnerável às inundações e analisar o papel do poder públicofrente ao evento materializado.Para tanto, foram aplicados questionários nas áreas da cidade consideradas pela Companhia de Pesquisa de Recursos Minerais (CPRM) como vulneráveis às inundações. Concluiu-se que a privação econômica e a baixa escolaridade são condições predominantes entre os vulneráveis e o poder público mais atuante é a prefeitura municipal com ações incipientes e insatisfatórias, paliativas e emergenciais.

O objetivo foi avaliar se a população tinha informações a respeito do aquecimento global e mudanças climáticas. Em caso de uma resposta afirmativa, procurouse conhecer as principais fontes de informação a que teve acesso e suas posições pessoais diante de um assunto polêmico na atualidade. Verificouse que sobre mudanças climáticas, suas causas e conseqüências, as pessoas ainda adquirem mais informações na televisão e na internet, o que é preocupante, haja vista que os fatos divulgados pelas redes televisivas e pela rede mundial de computadores são, muitas vezes, alarmistas e desprovidos de fundamentos científicos. Aquecimento global e mudanças climáticas na visão de adultos residentes em cidades paulistas ABSTRACT: This study was conducted through interviews in mid2009, in the cities of São Bernardo do Campo, Santo Antonio de Posse, Pederneiras and Tapiratiba, located in São Paulo State, Brazil. The aim was to evaluate if the population had information about the global warming and climate changes. In case of an affirmative answer, the main sources of information that they had access were identified and also their personal views on this controversial subject today. Regarding the climate changes and its causes and consequences, it was found that people acquire more information through television and internet, which is worrying, given that the facts disclosed by the television networks and the worldwide computers network, are often alarmist and lacking scientific foundation.
