Application of spatio-temporal scan statistics for the detection of areas with increased risk for American visceral leishmaniasis in the state of Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: Abstract.Mirroring the global increase of registered cases of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL), this infection has become a growing public health problem in Brazil during the last several years. As the traditional approach to control employed by the governmental health agencies has failed to reduce the incidence and epidemic outbreaks of this illness, we propose a re-evaluation of the national strategy of intervention and monitoring. Our thinking is based on a series of spatio-temporal scan statistics of … Show more

“…This result confirms the observations made previously in 2007, when the existence of microsites for the establishment of the vector in the urban environment was recorded, consistently with the heterogeneity provided by the urban landscape. This pattern of clustering of areas with high risk of transmission of VL was observed also in Brazil, based on human and canine cases of VL [80, 81]. The mean of captures was three times higher than these obtained in 2007 although the percentage of houses with Lu.…”

“…The incidence of VL cases in the Natal vicinity has occurred in cycles, similar to the pattern of VL observed in other endemic areas of Brazil (Carneiro et al 2007, Malaviya et al 2011). This has been attributed to the proximity of humans to infected reservoir hosts and sand fly vectors.…”

“…A significant part of the modeling work in this field is epidemiological [5-7]. In addition, models have also been used to study regulation of gene expression, protein synthesis, and metabolism of the parasite at the genome-wide level [8-10].…”
