This paper reports on a quantitative investigation into the occurrence of English in product advertisements in Dutch-speaking Belgium, French-speaking Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain. For each country six issues of Elle in 2004 were collected and all ads of half a page or larger were analyzed, for a total of 2,384 different ads. More than two-thirds of those ads contained one or more English words. The actual occurrence of English was low, since 90 per cent of the ads with English were partly in English and partly in the local language, and only 13 per cent of the total amount of the text in those ads was in English. English was especially used for advertising products that can be associated with modernity. Our results regarding the amount of English used and the position of English in the ad do not completely corroborate those of other studies. This could indicate an increase in the use of English in product ads, but it could also be due to the fact that we applied a different research method than had been previously used. The countries we investigated differ considerably in the amount of English used. These differences shed new light on earlier theoretical studies that have compared European countries on the use and status of English.

LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE is important in intercultural business communication (IBC) studies. But equally important is developing intercultural communicative competence, that is, a recognition of the cultural factors influencing behavior in business encounters around the globe (Beamer, 1992;Bennett, 1986;Varner, 2001). This article suggests how tertiary-level foreign language (FL) courses can be contextualized to promote intercultural learning geared to "achieving an awareness of cultural diversity and an understanding of different modes of living and behaviour" (Krück, 1992, p. 299). It describes the learning projects and tasks incorporated into the 1st-year IBC program at Nijmegen University in the Netherlands, where an integrative approach to course programming was introduced in 2001-2002. INTERCULTURAL LEARNINGByram (1997) assumes a direct relationship between FL teaching and the development of intercultural communication competence. In his view, FL courses should not only teach students the language needed to communicate but also confront them with "the experience of otherness," as the effectiveness of communication in the FL depends on their ability to "decentre" and understand how messages will be 308

Cross-cultural studies (Hofstede, 1984, 1991, 2001; Hall, 1959, 1976) posit that Mexico is a more collectivistic and high context culture than the United States of America and therefore it could be claimed that Mexicans will communicate and perceive professional communication in a different way than US Americans. In contrast, professional communication and social (psychology) studies argue that in order to communicate in a truly intercultural way it is necessary to go beyond the frame of cultural dimensions, since shared professional and educational frameworks could override the impact of cultural differences in professional settings. While empirical evidence so far has shown mixed results, the results of this article provide additional evidence to support the view that the two cited cultural dimensions have been overridden, since the Mexican (N=280) and US American (N=300) student samples showed a rather similar perception of professional dialogues in a monocultural as well as in an intercultural communication setting. A shared framework of knowledge and skills, the impact of the new media and technologies, the virtual and real intercultural encounters between Mexicans and US Americans, their shared educational level, and the fact that nearly all of the Mexican participants reported to speak English as a foreign language and that a majority of the US American participants reported to speak Spanish as a foreign language, could explain, at least for the studied samples, the observed convergence.

ResumenEn este artículo presentamos los resultados de un estudio empírico y sincrónico sobre la presencia de la lengua inglesa en un corpus de 208 ofertas de empleo publicadas en lengua española en el sitio web www.monster.es durante el mes de noviembre de 2011. El propósito de este estudio ha sido identificar la presencia de anglicismos en tanto que 'préstamos no adaptados', usados en las ofertas de empleo, determinar su presencia y cantidad y establecer hasta qué punto la presencia del inglés depende de los siguientes factores extralingüísticos: el sector de actividad económica, el rango de la ocupación anunciada (alto, intermedio o bajo) y el tipo de organización (internacional o nacional). Los resultados obtenidos indican que el porcentaje de ofertas de empleo que contienen por lo menos una palabra inglesa (87,5%) superó significativamente el porcentaje de ofertas de empleo redactadas exclusivamente en español (12,5%). Mediante la aplicación de las pruebas estadísticas U de Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis y el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman (rS) hemos podido verificar que una mayor presencia del inglés depende del sector económico, del rango de la vacante y el carácter internacional de la empresa anunciante. Estos hallazgos corroboran las razones dadas por otros autores según las cuales las empresas internacionales pueden usar el inglés para ofrecer una imagen internacional consistente y como herramienta para seleccionar candidatos. Y, en línea con los resultados de otros estudios de corpus y lexicográficos previos, también aquí el sector de las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) es el que adopta la mayor cantidad de préstamos no adaptados del inglés. INTRODUCCIÓNLa influencia y presencia del inglés en la lengua española en general y, particularmente, en el español de las profesiones es un hecho indiscutible que ha sido documentado a través de numerosos estudios y artículos aparecidos en revistas especializadas y prensa general dedicados a los anglicismos tanto en España (véase la documentada bibliografía de Rodríguez González, 2002a, 2002b como en los países hispanoamericanos (Baumgardner, 2006). Los resultados de estos estudios han servido para realizar inventarios de préstamos no adaptados procedentes del inglés y para la creación de diccionarios de anglicismos como, por ejemplo, el Nuevo Diccionario de Anglicismos (Buades & González, 2009) y, así, describir la presencia e influencia de la lengua inglesa en el español. No obstante, una mayoría de los estudios realizados hasta hoy en el ámbito hispánico son de tipo cualitativo y los que son cuantitativos se limitan, a menudo, a medir la presencia del inglés en la lengua española a partir de estadísticos descriptivos básicos como la cantidad de ocurrencias y proporción de palabras inglesas en corpus orales (Quilis, 1984;Gómez Capuz, 2009) y escritos.
