As Instituições de Ensino Superior são complexas e diferentes de outros tipos organizacionais em razão de sua estrutura, sua organização e seus objetivos serem diferenciados. Essas instituições enfrentam diversos desafios, como acirramento da concorrência, novas exigências legais e controle de entidades reguladoras. Em virtude dessas características diferenciadoras, as IES são organizações que necessitam de formas diferenciadas de gestão. O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar as características da produção intelectual relacionadas à gestão de Instituições de Ensino Superior no Brasil. O estudo consiste em uma pesquisa bibliométrica, realizada por meio da análise de artigos publicados em periódicos indexados nas bases de dados Spell (nacional) e Scopus (internacional). A pesquisa é considerada quantitativa, no que diz respeito ao mapeamento realizado em 85 artigos selecionados, nas duas bases de dados. Os resultados encontrados demonstraram um aumento significativo do interesse sobre o tema da gestão de Instituições de Ensino Superior nos últimos cinco anos. Outros indicadores analisados são evolução dos artigos publicados, características de autoria e co-autoria, autores mais profícuos, principais temas abordados, revistas e instituições que mais publicaram e abordagens metodológicas utilizadas. A UNINOVE, a PUC e a USP foram às instituições que mais tiveram publicações. Foram identificados que 9 periódicos são responsáveis por um terço das publicações, correspondendo ao core da temática. Acredita-se que o estudo tenha contribuído na identificação das principais características da produção científica e que possa colaborar com os pesquisadores e demais envolvidos com o campo da gestão de Instituições de Ensino Superior no país.
