The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and histopathological aspects of topical application of pure and ozonized andiroba oil (Carapa guianensis Aublet.) on the healing process of wounds in healthy horses. Eight 6.25 cm 2 wounds were surgically produced on each horse, from the cranial region to the sacrum, being four wounds on each side of the lumbar region. In three animals, left side was used for macroscopic observations and area measurement and right side was used for histopathological analysis. For the other two animals, evaluations were inverted. The beginning of the topical treatment occurred 12 hours after surgical induction of the injuries and was maintained daily until complete healing of the wounds, using saline solution (GC), ozonized saline solution (GO) sequentially and bilaterally in the craniocaudal direction, pure andiroba oil (GAP) and ozonized andiroba oil (GAO). Randomly, the sequence of the treatments was modified. Macroscopic and histopathological analyses were performed at 3, 7, 14, and 21 days after surgery. The time for complete healing of all wounds was recorded. A wound contraction of 67.75% for GC, 65.26% for GO, 67.91% for GAP, and 69.84% for GAO were recorded. Histopathologic evaluation revealed that wounds from the GAO and GAP had an advanced epithelialization, fibroblast proliferation and collagen deposition, moderate vascular proliferation, and presence of PMN infiltrate and discrete viewing of MN. It was possible to conclude that all treatments had benefits when comparing to control group, concluding that both pure and ozonized andiroba oil may be good options for treating wounds in horses. ResumoEste trabalho realizou uma avaliação clínica e histopatológica da aplicação tópica do óleo de andiroba (Carapa guianensis Aublet), puro e ozonizado, no processo de cicatrização de feridas em cinco equinos saudáveis. Oito feridas de 6,25 cm 2 foram induzidas cirurgicamente, quatro de cada lado da região lombar, craniais em relação à região sacral. Em três animais, o lado esquerdo foi destinado à avaliação macroscópica e mensuração de área, enquanto o lado direito foi destinado à análise histopatológica. Nos outros dois animais, as avaliações foram invertidas. O tratamento tópico foi iniciado 12 horas após a indução cirúrgica e foi mantido diariamente até a completa cicatrização das feridas. Foram usados, sequencialmente e bilateralmente, no sentido craniocaudal: solução salina (GC), solução salina ozonizada (GO), óleo de andiroba puro (GAP) e óleo de andiroba ozonizado (GAO). Aleatoriamente, a sequência de tratamentos foi modificada. As análises macroscópicas e microscópicas foram realizadas 3, 7, 14 e 21 dias após a cirurgia, e o tempo total para cicatrização registrado. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of oral creatine supplementation on the athletic performance of equines used for barrel racing. Ten healthy Quarter Horses, or Quarter Horse crossbred, weighing 429.7 ± 25.3 kg and with mean age of 3.8 ± 1.2 years, were used. Animals were evaluated in four different moments (M1, M2, M3, M4), and between M3 and M4, they were supplemented with 28 g of creatine/100 kg of body weight, orally, for 45 days. Although significant alterations for LDH activity, plasma glucose and packed cell volume were observed, it was possible to conclude that there was no improvement in the athletic performance for the animals used on the experiment, as there were no changes in time scores, heart rate and plasma lactate, variables considered as performance indicators, before and after supplementation.

Bras. 33(11):1385-1389, novembro 2013 1385 RESUMO.-O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a influência do exercício físico de intensidade submáxima sobre as concentrações séricas de aspartato aminotransferase (AST), creatinoquinase (CK) e lactato-desidrogenase (LDH) em muares durante prova de enduro de 100 km realizada no estado do Espírito Santo. Para tal foram obtidas amostras de soro de 20 muares em três momentos assim definidos: no repouso (T0); após 54 km de percurso (T1); após 80 km de percurso (T2); e após 100 km de percurso (T3). As referidas amostras foram encaminhadas ao Laboratório Clínico Veterinário (CEMEVES) para processamento. Na avaliação da atividade sérica de AST, os valores médios registrados nos momentos T0, T1, T2 e T3 foram, respectivamente, de 341,7±73,9 UI/L, 403,1±78,4 UI/L, 410,5±70,5 UI/L e 426,5±66,7 UI/L. Na avaliação da atividade sérica da LDH, os valores médios registrados foram de 423,1±101,8 UI/L, 534,4±131,8 UI/L, 628,5±100,6 UI/L e 823,4±273,2 UI/L, respectivamente, nos momentos T0, T1, T2 e T3. Por fim, na avaliação da atividade sérica da CK os valores de mediana foram de 231,3 UI/L, 310,6 UI/L, 253,2 UI/L e 476,0 UI/L, respectivamente nos momentos T0, T1, T2 e T3. A análise dos resultados demonstrou que o exercí-cio físico imposto levou ao aumento significativo das atividades séricas de AST e LDH e não alterou as concentrações séricas de CK. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of an exercise of submaximal intensity on serum concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in mules during endurance exercise in Espirito Santo, Brazil. Serum samples were obtained from 20 mules in four different moments: at rest (T0); after 54 km (T1); after 80 km (T2); and after 100 km (T3). RESUMO. Sarcóides são tumores de pele do tipo fibroblásticos não metastatizantes, considerados os mais comuns em equinos. Sua etiopatogenia está relacionada à infecção pelo papilomavírus bovino do tipo 1 e tipo 2. A transmissão e a disseminação para outras partes do corpo do mesmo animal estão associadas a mordidas, fricção, fômites e insetos. Apresentam-se agressivos no local afetado devido à capacidade infiltrativa e geralmente refratários às diferentes formas de terapias. Os sarcóides são classificados em seis formas de acordo com as suas apresentações clínicas, sendo estas: oculto, verrucoso, nodular, fibroblástico, misto e maligno. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi relatar o caso clínico de sarcóide recidivante localizado na glande de um equino atendido na Clínica de Equídeos do Centro de Desenvolvimento da Pecuária da Universidade Federal da Bahia, situado no município de Santo Amaro -BA. No presente caso clínico, um equino apresentou uma massa tumoral na região da glande, onde foi realizada a éxerese da massa e através de exame histopatológico observou-se características compatíveis com sarcóide. Após aproximadamente quatro meses da intervenção cirúrgica, o sarcóide apresentou recidiva sendo instituído tratamento com associação entre penectomia parcial, pomada a base de aciclovir a 5% e auto-hemoterapia Palavras chave: cavalo, tumor, penectomia, aciclovir. Recurrent sarcoid in the glans of an equine: Case reportABSTRACT. Sarcoids are fibroblast and non-metastatic skin tumors, representing the most common tumors in horses. Its etiopathogenesis is related to bovine papillomavirus type 1 and type 2 infections, being the transmission and dissemination to other parts of the body of the same animal associated with bites, friction, fomites and insects. Clinical behavior is locally aggressive due to infiltrative capacity, as well as being refractory to different forms of therapies. The sarcoids are classified in six forms according to their clinical presentations, being these: hidden, verrucous, nodular, fibroblastic, mixed and malignant. The objective of this study is to report a clinical case of recurrent sarcoid in the equine glans, attended at the equine clinic of the Centro de Desenvolvimento da Pecuária of the Universidade Federal da Bahia, located in the municipality of Santo Amaro -BA. In the present case, an equine presented a tumor mass in the region of the glans, where a mass examination and histopathological examination were carried out; characteristics compatible with the sarcoid were observed. After five months of surgical intervention, the sarcoid presented recurrence with treatment instituted with an association between partial penectomy, ointment based on acyclovir 5% and autohemotherapy.

Os animais foram submetidos a exame clínico e complementar. O exame clínico consistiu na inspeção e palpação da linha média. O método de exame complementar foi a ultrassonografia da linha media na área referente à cicatriz abdominal. Foram encontrados complicações incisionais em sete animais (58,3%). As complicações incisionais encontradas foram fibrose (41,6%), reação ao fio de sutura (41,6%), fístulas (16,6%), edema peri-incisional (25%), infecção incisional (16,6%), drenagem incisional (16,6%). No exame indireto foi observado edema pós-operatório, pequenas áreas focais de líquido ao redor do fio de sutura. Mesmo com as complicações incisionais encontradas e o número de animais examinados, o fio de poliéster mostrou-se resistente e seguro podendo ser utilizado na laparorrafia mediana em equinos. PHYSICAL AND ULTRASONOGRAPHIC ASSESSMENT OF SCAR FROM CELIORRHAPHY WITH POLYESTER THREAD IN HORSES UNDERGOING TREATMENT OF ACUTE ABDOMINAL COLICABSTRACT: A survey on the incisional complications in twelve horses submitted to median celiotomy followed with celiorrhaphy with polyester suture was performed. The animals were submitted to clinical and complementary examination. Inspection and palpation of the midline for clinical evaluation was performed. Ultrasonography of the abdominal scar of the midline area was used as an indirect test. Seven animals presented incisional complications (58.3%), such as fibrosis (41.6%), suture material reaction (41.6%), fistulas (16.6%), peri-incisional edema (25%), wound infection (16.6%), and incisional drainage (16.6%). In indirect evaluation, post-operative edema was observed, as well as small focal areas with fluid around the suture. Despite the incisional complications found and the small number of animals examined, it was concluded that polyester suture proved to be resilient and safe, and can be used in median celiorrhaphy in horses.
