The purpose of this study was to investigate histological changes in dairy cows' hooves with or without injuries from naturally acquired laminitis. Cull cows with no clinical signs of hoof abnormalities (G1, n=9) and those with macroscopic lesions associated with laminitis without (G2, n=23) or with lameness (G3, n=7) were used in the study. After slaughter, samples of dermo-epidermal junctions of sole, axial and dorsal regions of the hoof were obtained and histologically processed using HE and PAS staining. Congestion, hemorrhage and inflammatory infiltrate in the dermis of sole, axial and dorsal regions were blindly and semiquantitatively evaluated by the same researcher. Inflammatory infiltrate was evaluated in the dermal laminae of axial and dorsal regions. The morphology of epidermal cells and the presence of irregularities in three regions of the basement membrane (BM) length were examined using PAS staining. Scores of lesions in different regions of the hoof in the same group and in different groups for each region of the hoof were compared using non-parametric analyses. Inflammatory infiltrate in the dermis of all regions of the hoof was detected in all groups with no significant statistical difference. Cows with no clinical signs of hoof abnormalities secondary to laminitis (G1) have inflammation scores and epidermal cell changes similar to those of groups with laminitis injuries, suggesting the existence of a prodromal phase for this disease in bovines. BM had irregularities with a variable intensity along its length, however, with no difference among groups. The pattern of BM irregularities found has not been reported so far and does not resemble the BM collapse described in horses and cattle with induced acute laminitis. Is it concluded that even in the absence of macroscopic hoof signs associated to laminitis, dairy cows have histological injuries compatible with inflammation of the dermo-epidermal junction as in affected animals. Basement membrane of cows with or without laminitis associated lesions had irregularities with an irregular distribution along its length which need to be further studied.
Two hundred broiler chickens of 21 days of age were distributed in a completely randomized factorial arrangement 2 Â 5 (two oil sources, i.e. soybean or canola oil and five levels of CLA supplementation, i.e. 0.0%, 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% and 1.00%). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dietary supplementation of broiler diets with CLA and oil sources on the lipid content and on the oxidative stability of chicken meat submitted to refrigeration or freezing storage temperatures. The use of canola oil and increasing CLA levels resulted in a linear reduction (Po0:05) on the total lipids in breast meat. These results can explain a linear reduction (Po0:05) observed in the malonaldehyde content of refrigerated and frozen meat of birds receiving canola oil. Birds receiving soybean oil and supplemented with CLA showed an abrupt reduction of total lipids on breast meat from 0.89 g/100 g at 0% CLA to 0.36 g/100 g at 0.5% CLA followed by a small increase at higher levels of CLA (Po0:05). These observations may help to explain the reduction (Po0:05) of oxidation in breast meat during frozen storage at 50 and 100 days as well as during cold storage at 5 1C.
The development of fungi causing soft rots and of ensuing cavities in cell walls was studied with a new technique, consisting in inoculation of sterilized wood sections placed on agar slants. The senior author proposes a new system of classification of the soft rot fungi. Applied to investigations on Ceratocystis ulmi (Buism.) C. Moreau, this technique permits further characterization of the morphology of this fungus, including the formation of microhyphae and microspore-like particles, often less than 0.5 μ in diameter, and recognition of the various configurations brought about by its growth in wood tissues. For example, microhyphae grow in a reticulate manner in close contact with starch grains, and these seem to break down.
ABSTRACT IN VITRO EFFICACY OF CHENOPODIUM AMBROSIOIDES EXTRACTS ON RHIPICEPHALUS (BOOPHILUS) MICROPLUS ENGORGED FEMALES. Chenopodium ambrosioides L. (Amaranthaceae)(wormseed) is a strongly aromatic plant employed popularly for its antiparasitic properties. This study evaluated the in vitro efficacy on laying and hatchability of eggs of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini, 1888) (Acari: Ixodidae) of hydroethanolic extracts from C. ambrosioides, using the adult immersion test. The treatments consisted of hydroethanolic extracts made with 5%, 10% and 25% of C. ambrosioides (weight/volume), distilled water and vehicle solution (consisting of propylene glycol at 5%, ethanol at 25% and distilled water). Ten ticks were distributed evenly for each group and immersed for 5 minutes in each of the tested extracts. The extracts containing 5%, 10% and 25% of C. ambrosioides showed average efficacies 13.27%, 22.56% and 31.87% respectively. These results indicate that extracts of C. ambrosioides, at the concentrations used, do not present potential for the control of the R. (B.) microplus strains researched.
