Palliative care settings in many countries acknowledge families as their prime focus of care, but in Brazil, to date, researchers have devoted scant attention to that practice setting. In this article, we report the findings of a study that explored how families define and manage their lives when they have a child or adolescent undergoing palliative care at home. Data included individual semistructured interviews with 14 family members of 11 different families. Interviews were transcribed and the coding procedure featured qualitative content analysis methods. The deductive coding was based on the major components of the Family Management Style Framework and the eight dimensions comprising these components. The analysis provides insight into families' daily practices and problems inherent in managing their everyday lives that are encountered when they have a child in palliative care. The article features discussion of implications for the palliative care related development of family nursing practice.
Objectives: to comprehend the perception of undergraduate nursing students about learning to care for the child and family through clinical simulation. Methods: this is a qualitative research conducted with ten nursing students through semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed through content analysis. Results: data were organized into two categories: “learning a new way to learn,” in which students describe their experiences during the simulation, and “learning a new way to care,” in which they reflect on learning through simulation. Final considerations: we believe that clinical simulation practice in teaching should be encouraged because of the benefits it can offer to the students, faculty, patients and their families. However, we recommend further studies to validate scenarios of child and family healthcare.
Objectives to perform the cultural adaptation of the Family Management Measure into the
Brazilian Portuguese language. Method the method complied with international recommendations for this type of
study and was composed of the following steps: translation of the instrument
into the Portuguese language; reaching consensus over the translated
versions; assessment by an expert committee; back translation; and pretest.
Results these stages enabled us to obtain conceptual, by-item, semantic, idiomatic,
and operational equivalences, in addition to content validation. Conclusion the Family Management Measure is adapted to the Brazilian Portuguese
language and that version is named Instrumento de Medida de Manejo

Objective: To understand the role of grandparents of hospitalized children with cancer. Methods: In a qualitative study, we interviewed eleven grandparents of children with cancer hospitalized at a referral center for pediatric oncology in São Paulo. The data were analyzed using the Hybrid Framework of Thematic Analysis. Results: Six themes were found to describe the role of grandparents in this context: Being the family’s support, Sharing love to my child and my grandchild, Being there for my child and my grandchild, Offering spiritual support to my child and my grandchild, Making an effort to be able to manage my own feelings and Balancing the demands of hospitalization with available resources. Final considerations: The findings show the significance of the grandparents’ role in this experience and emphasize the value of being considered, by health professionals, as part of the family and care.
RESUMO Objetivo: Compreender a experiência dos avós de ter um neto hospitalizado em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Pediátrica. Método: Estudo qualitativo, que utilizou o referencial teórico do Interacionismo Simbólico e, como referencial metodológico, os pressupostos da Teoria Fundamentada nos Dados, realizado com avós de crianças hospitalizadas em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Pediátrica de um hospital-escola de uma universidade do interior de São Paulo. Os dados foram coletados por meio de observação participante e entrevistas semiestruturadas e analisados seguindo as etapas de codificação aberta e axial da Teoria Fundamentada. Resultados: Foram entrevistados nove avós. Identificaram-se dois fenômenos: “Percebendo-se envoltos em uma tempestade” e “Lutando para ser a âncora da família”, que compreendem o sofrimento vivenciado e o papel de suporte desenvolvido pelos avós durante a hospitalização. Conclusão: Os avós desenvolvem um importante papel de sustentação familiar durante a crise, portanto é essencial que se pense em estratégias de cuidado da família que envolvam também essa geração familiar, cada vez mais presente e participativa nos diferentes cenários de atenção à saúde.
The objective of this study was to learn about the experience of suffering in hospitalized school-aged children. The methodological strategy used was narrative inquiry, and the Model of Suffering as the theoretical framework. Participants were 14 children. Data collection was performed using semi-structured interviews, guided by the following question: Tell me your story about getting sick and coming to the hospital. Results show that hospital events comprise the child's experience of suffering, represented by five categories: knowing the suffering caused by the disease; enduring to survive the experience of being ill, relaxing from enduring to free their emotions, living the suffering, and floating between enduring and suffering. The suffering or enduring of the child is determined by the context of the experience and by the support or interactions that surrounds them. In conclusion, nurses have the duty to offer children opportunities to express themselves and make the suffering bearable.
