Abusive use of alcohol and other drugs among prison system workers AbstractIn this study, we investigated the patterns of use of alcohol and other drugs among corrections officers in a northeastern Brazilian state, and the role this plays in the lives of workers, as well as the potential problems associated with the practice. In total, 403 corrections officers participated in the data collection, responding to the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) and a demographic questionnaire. The results point to the abuse of /dependency on alcohol, Cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, inhalants, and hypnotics. The determinants of this dynamic seem to be the type of prison unit, having another job in the security field, having over 10 years in the field, and working double shifts. These results suggest the need for attention to the work process and its relation to the mental health of prison staff, and the need to develop specific policies and programs for this profession, in order to minimize the harmful effects of working at a prison.
PALAVRAS chave: sistema prisional, agentes penitenciários, condições de trabalho, saúde mental, álcool e drogas Prevalence of Common Mental Disorders and Alcohol and Substance Abse Among Correctional OfficersABSTRACT -We investigated the prevalence of Common Mental Health Disorders (CMD) and substance abuse among correctional officers in a northeastern state of Brazil. In the study, 403 workers answered the SRQ-20, the ASSIST questionnaire and a semistructured interview script. Results show an incidence of 23.57% of CMD and abuse/dependence in tobacco (35.9%), alcohol (88.3%), marijuana (10.5%), cocaine (3.6%), amphetamine (1.1%), inhalants (7.6%), hypnotics (4.4%) and hallucinogens (0.3%). The determinant factors are: type of detention facility, having another occupation in the field of security, over 10 years in the profession and working double shifts. This is challenging not only in terms of providing health care for correctional officers, but also to psychologists working in this field due to how it affects the lives of those workers.
