Este artigo retrata o processo de definição da zona de influência do Museu da Vida, ou seja, das áreas do município do Rio de Janeiro de onde a maioria dos seus visitantes provém e cuja população é a base para a amostragem da pesquisa. Como resultados, este artigo faz uma análise sociodemográfica desse público e apresenta algumas de suas características relevantes. Essa definição de zona de influência, dentro da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, uniu conceitos de território e o conhecimento acumulado da proveniência dos visitantes do Museu da Vida. Definiu-se essa zona como uma área contínua do município do Rio de Janeiro que abrange Zona Central, Grande Tijuca, Zona Norte e Grande Jacarepaguá. Nesta zona de influência, 1.296 pessoas responderam a um questionário autoaplicado, das quais 13% já haviam visitado o Museu da Vida. Em contraste com aqueles que nunca visitaram o Museu, o público que já o visitou é relativamente jovem, com uma discreta maioria de mulheres e com renda bem distribuída de acordo com a demografia local, porém com um grau de escolaridade maior que a média. Analisaram-se, também, hábitos culturais relacionados à busca de informação em ciência e tecnologia na infância; a percepção dos visitantes sobre a influência da visita ao museu; seu interesse, conhecimento e engajamento a respeito de temas de ciência e tecnologia e a forma como os visitantes lidam com notícias falsas em ciência. Essas análises permitem uma visão mais sistêmica da importância de um museu de ciência em uma região com baixíssima oferta de equipamentos de ciência e cultura.
A literatura sobre as práticas museológicas itinerantes é ainda carente de referenciais teóricos que consigam situar a itinerância como tema central e particular na relação ciência-sociedade. O presente artigo tem como objetivo apresentar uma proposta de um novo construto teórico que possa ser mobilizado por pesquisadores e outros profissionais que tenham a itinerância como foco de suas investigações e/ou atividades. Trata-se de um convite à reflexão sobre a itinerância como amplificadora do diálogo do museu com seus públicos, situando suas singularidades e seu potencial para promover a coprodução de conhecimentos em uma dimensão espaço-temporal muito própria. Reconhecidas as possibilidades e oportunidade de o museu itinerante ser transformado a partir das redes estabelecidas e do encontro com audiências tão diversas nas geografias visitadas, apontamos para a premência de uma agenda de pesquisa sobre o fenômeno itinerância. O campo dos estudos sociais da ciência e o conceito de fronteiras fornecem o mapa e o itinerário que podem descortinar novos espaços e oportunidades de produção do conhecimento sobre a itinerância.
Uma boa oferta cultural não é suficiente para atrair os visitantes. Socialmente, esta é uma questão induzida pela distribuição do capital cultural e científico. Esse trabalho investigou o interesse por temas científicos, expectativas sobre museus de ciência e diferentes visões sobre a própria ciência mediante entrevistas com 108 sujeitos que nunca visitaram o Museu da Vida. A metodologia baseou-se na Análise de Conteúdo e no Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo. Os resultados indicam expectativas relacionadas a temas das ciências da saúde, biológicas e exatas, e pouca adesão às ciências humanas e sociais. Além disso, identificou-se uma percepção do museu como espaço de construção de cidadania e formação da geração futura, e uma visão da ciência relacionada ao seu valor e ao seu papel no futuro. Conhecer essas expectativas contribui para que os museus de ciência desenvolvam ações capazes de atrair o público potencial e oportunizar sua participação nesses espaços.
