The objectives of this study were to verify the occurrence of urinary incontinence (UI) and its characteristics in pre-frail and frail elderly patients of a geriatrics outpatient clinic, compare the presence of frailness criteria among the elderly with and without UI and identify among the frailty criteria the chance of risk for UI among those elderly outpatients. Participants were 100 elderly individuals, with an average age of 76.2 years; 65 participants reported UI, 71.3% of which presented three or more frailness criteria. The occurrence of UI was greater in frail participants (p=0.0011). Multivariate analysis showed that the criteria slowness (OR=4.99) and exhaustion (OR=4.85) has a statistically significant relation with UI. The occurrence of UI was high and participants who presented slowness have a risk almost five times greater to presenting UI while those reporting exhaustion have a risk five times greater for UI compared to those without these criteria.
Palavras-Chave: Unidade de terapia intensiva; enfermagem familiar; acolhimento; relações enfermeiro-paciente.ABSTRACT: This qualitative, descriptive study described how nurses appropriate user embracement in caring for families in the ICU. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews of six nurses working in the ICU of a public hospital in Bahia from May to June 2011. From thematic content analysis of the transcripts, three categories emerged: welcoming the family in the ICU; relating to families in the ICU; and caring for families in the ICU. The results highlight that nurses understand the family as a unit of care, but feel unprepared in user embracement, which is thus restricted to applying case history and anamnesis on admission, and providing updates on patient clinical condition during visits.
Objective: To estimate the time of decision (TD) to look for medical care and the time of arrival (TA) at the health service for men (M) and women (W) suffering from acute myocardial infarction and to analyze the influence of the interpretation of pain and pain resistance behaviors during these times. Methods: This is an exploratory research, performed at the university hospital in Salvador/Bahia. 43 W and 54 M were interviewed. To study the dependence among sociodemographic and gender variables, the Fisher Exact Test was used. To analyze times, a geometric mean (GM) was used. In order to verify the association between the GM of TD and TA and the judgment of pain, and between the GM of TD and TA and the behavior of resistance to pain, as well as to test the time of interaction between the gender variable and other variables of interest, the robust regression model was used. The statistical significance adopted was 5%. Results: The GM of the TD for M was 1.13 h; for W, 0.74 h. The GM of the TA was 1.74 h for M and 1.47 h for W. Those who did not recognize the symptoms of AMI and presented behavior of resistance to pain had higher TD and TA, being the associations significant. Gender did not change the associations of interest. Conclusion:The findings demonstrate the importance of health education aiming at the benefits of early treatment.
Objective: To understand the changes in the routine of the family companion during the hospitalization of a family member. Methods: Qualitative research carried out with 16 family companions of people with self-care dependency in a public hospital. The recorded interviews were conducted individually using a semi-structured script. We used the thematic analysis for data organization and analysis, and discussed in light of theoretical assumptions and the sensitivity proposed by Maffesoli. Results: Four categories emerged, namely: break of substantial bonds with the children; the abdication of labor activity in favor of being together; hospital rituals in the routine of the family companion; and, self-care and the power of being together. Conclusion: Staying in the accompanying process overlaps all the daily life activities of the family companions.
