Abstract: Objective: To estimate the time of decision (TD) to look for medical care and the time of arrival (TA) at the health service for men (M) and women (W) suffering from acute myocardial infarction and to analyze the influence of the interpretation of pain and pain resistance behaviors during these times. Methods: This is an exploratory research, performed at the university hospital in Salvador/Bahia. 43 W and 54 M were interviewed. “…Other studies have reported that delays were longer in patients with AMI who did not appraise their symptoms as being serious or originating from the heart (7,10,12,28). Mussi et al found that those who did not recognize the symptoms of AMI and did not manage pain effectively took longer before deciding to seek treatment and present to a hospital (7). Recognizing that symptoms are coming from the heart is an important factor leading patients to seek early hospital treatment (11,12).…”

“…The time between onset of MI symptoms and initiation of coronary reperfusion is a determining factor of morbidity and mortality (2,4,5). Early recognition of AMI-related symptoms and strategies for enhancing early diagnosis and treatment avoid fatalities and maintain quality of life by improving coronary reperfusion and reducing the possibility of death from ventricular arrhythmia (2,6,7). Mortality rate from AMI is reported to be high before arriving in hospital (1,8).…”

“…This could possibly explain why the majority of patients established their first medical contact in an EMS, as well as the shorter delay in seeking medical help and the greater accuracy in the diagnosis. However, the time frame for seeking medical help might also be related to a lack of information, not only to the severity of symptoms, concerning the significance of the pain, denial that the chest pain may actually signal a heart attack, misinterpretation of the chest pain, reluctance to call the family practitioners at an inconvenient time and lack of encouragement from family members for seeking medical help (19)(20)(21)(22). The definitive and referral diagnosis from the FMS coincided to a lesser degree with the diagnosis made in the EMS.…”
