In 2016, M. Laborda-Pemán and T. De Moor issued a call to advance the conversation between commons scholars and historians. This paper argues that in order to further this conversation, in the case of Western Europe more attention needs to be paid to the centuries preceding the blossoming of the commons in the high Middle Ages. It focuses on NW Iberia to show that in this case, as in others, such developments need to be assessed against the processes triggered by the collapse of the Roman Empire. On the basis of the extant sources, and building upon some of the concerns of critical institutionalism, it then considers some of the theoretical avenues that could facilitate such a dialogue: addressing the multifunctional, socially embedded nature of institutions; the weight of social inequalities and power relations in their configuration and functioning; the role of conflict in the definition of norms and their transformation over time; and the discursive practices aimed at legitimising specific institutional arrangements.
Primeros resultados de una prospección intensivaThe historical construction of landscapes in the central plateau.
Abstract: Over the last years the advancement of early medieval settlement studies in the Iberian Peninsula has enabled researchers to propose more adequate methodologies for the analysis of this historical period. Thanks to the increasing mass of archaeological data and regional studies we are in a better position to recognize and characterize early medieval settlements. This essay presents an archaeological survey project that, building on the recent excavation of an early medieval village, that of La Mata del Palomar, analyses a territory between the rivers Voltoya and Eresma, in the north west of the province of Segovia. This essay presents the results of a first archaeological survey and discusses the questions that arise from a preliminary approach to the archaeological and the documentary evidence.
The aim of this paper is to outline a critique of current models of peasant resistance for early medieval Northern Iberia and to advance some of the elements that might contribute to the development of a more comprehensive interpretation of peasant struggles in the area. It challenges the idea -sometimes made explicit, others largely implied in the historiographythat the peasant community was both the primary subject of collective action as well as the prevalent peasant political subject. Through the analysis of records of conflicts involving peasant individuals and communities it demonstrates that other forms of collective action are visible in the sources and addresses the question of local leaderships. Ultimately, it argues that in order to provide a more comprehensive account of peasant resistance and class struggle in the early medieval period such forms of conflict should be also taken into account.
This article explores the written evidence for local meetings and meeting places in early medieval León between the tenth and early eleventh centuries. It considers the functions of local meetings, as well as the role they played in the negotiation of social relations within the localities. The analysis of meeting places – among which churches feature prominently in the record – provides further insight into the ways in which links between the localities and the overarching social and political framework developed, and reveals the different forces that could lead to the institutionalization of local meetings.
The past few decades have witnessed great change in the study of the early Middle Ages in the Northern Iberian Peninsula. Spanish and Portuguese historiographies have moved away from older grand narratives such as 'Reconquest and Repopulation', which traced a centuries-long process encompassing the ultimate victory of Christianity over Islam and the construction of distinct nations or national societies. The basic tenets of these and other essentialist approaches to a period traditionally seen as the cradle of Spain and Portugal have been questioned and now superseded by a clearer awareness of the territorial diversity characterising the 8th to 11th centuries. Yet the ballast of both nationalism and regionalism has obstructed meaningful comparison amongst the Iberian regions to date. Drawing on the work of the research group EarlyMedIberia, this
