Background: Sugarcane silage (SCS) has often been characterized by large dry matter (DM) losses associated with reduction in soluble nutrients and increase in indigestible fiber. Objective: To evaluate the effect of including discarded fruits on the losses and nutritional value in SCS. Methods: A completely randomized design was used with five treatments andfive replications. Silageswere added with 15% (as-fed basis) papaya (Carica papaya) (SP), acerola (Malpighia glabra) (SA), banana (Musa sp.)(SB) or tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) (ST). The control treatment was composed only of SCS. Twenty-five (25-L) plastic buckets were used to make the experimental silos, which were opened on the 90th day after their closure. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance. Results: Gas losses and total DM losses were lower and DM recovery was higher in SB and SA than in the control (p>0.05). However, there was treatment effect for lactic and acetic acids, ammonia nitrogen contents, lactic acid bacteria, and yeasts and mold counts (p<0.05). Conclusion: The inclusion of 15% banana or acerola in SCS decreases losses and increases DM recovery. Furthermore, the inclusion of 15% banana improves the nutritional value of SCS.Keywords: additives, animal feeding, crop byproduct, fiber content, forage conservation, discard fruit. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance, milk composition, blood and urinary biochemical parameters and milk fatty acid profile of Saanen goats fed pornunça silage‐based diets containing different levels of tannin (11, 28, 36 and 44 g/kg dry matter). Intake of feed, milk production, milk composition and biochemical parameters were affected (P < 0.05). The content of 10:0, 12:0 and 14:0 fatty acids decreased, while those of 18:0, cis‐9 18:1, trans‐11 18:1, cis‐9, trans‐11 18:2 and cis‐9, cis‐12, cis‐15 18:3 increased as more tannin was added (P < 0.05). The ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids increased, while the thrombogenicity and atherogenicity indices decreased as tannin was increased (P < 0.05). The inclusion of up to 28 g/kg of tannin was the most appropriate level to improve the fatty acid profiles of goats’ milk and prevent further falls in dry matter intake and milk production.
The objective of the current research was to evaluate the fermentative characteristics of silage made with the upper third section of cassava (Manihot esculenta) plants with added condensed tannin levels of 0, 25, 50 and 75 g/kg dry matter (DM). The experimental design was a complete randomized design, with treatments arranged in a 4 × 7 factorial (tannin addition levels × days of ensiling). The loss of gas and the presence of moulds observed in the opening days had increased linearly. Fermentative characteristics were decreased by the addition of tannin. Acetic acid content showed a linear increase. Tannin levels had a quadratic effect on gas production at 28 days of ensiling. After 56 days, however, tannin levels had no significant effect on silage gas production. After 28 days of ensiling, the degradability of potentially degradable fraction ‘b’ demonstrated quadratic effect. The same occurred with the fractions ‘a’, ‘b’ which were undegradable after 56 days of ensiling. The addition of condensed tannin lengthened the fermentative stage and caused the silage to stabilize after 56 days of ensiling.
Palavras-chave: acidose, rúmen, manga, pequenos ruminantes ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to clinically evaluate the effects of intra ruminal administration of two different
The objective was to evaluate the fermentation profile, in vitro gas production and nutritional quality of pornunça (Manihot spp.) silages containing levels of condensed tannin (CT; 0, 4, 8 and 12% on dry matter (DM) basis), at five opening times (0, 3, 7, 14, 28 and 56 days). A completely randomized design in a 4 × 5 factorial arrangement was adopted, with four replications, totalling 80 experimental silos. The pH and NH3-N analyses were performed at all opening times of the silos. The other analyses were performed only with silages opened at 56 days of storage. There was an interaction effect between CT levels and silo opening times for pH and NH3-N. Tannin levels in pornunça silages after 56 days ensiling increased the pH and DM and reduced crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF). There was a quadratic effect for NH3-N, acetic acid, butyric acid, gas losses, dry matter recovery (DMR), hemicellulose and acid detergent fibre. Inclusion of 4 and 8% CT in pornunça silage promotes a rapid decline in pH, being within the acceptable limit for adequate fermentation at 3 days of ensiling. Silages with 4% CT establish the pH at 28 days of opening the silos, with reduced NH3-N. Silages with 4% CT present higher concentrations of acetic and butyric acids and greater DMR. Inclusion of CT in pornunça silage after 56 days ensiling increases DM and reduces CP and NDF, directly affecting the in vitro degradability and reducing gas production.
The objective of this study was to determine the greatest concentration of condensed tannin (CT) extracted from Schinopsis brasiliensis in pornunça silages based on intake, digestibility, milk production, ingestive behavior and estimated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in dairy goats. Eight multiparous Saanen goats at 30 days of lactation, with 38.0 kg of initial body weight, production of 2.0 ± 0.4 kg of milk/day, mean age of 2–3 years, were distributed in a double Latin square (4x4) with four experimental periods and four diets with different tannin levels at concentrations 0% (control), 2.4, 3.6 and 4.8% tannin of total diet. The CT levels in the silage of pornunça promoted a linear decrease for the intake of dry matter (DM, P < 0.001), organic matter (OM, P < 0.001), ash (P < 0.001), crude protein (CP, P < 0.001), neutral detergent fiber (NDF, P < 0.001), acid detergent fiber (ADF, P < 0.001) and water (P < 0.001). The inclusion of CT also promoted a linear decrease in apparent digestibility coefficients of DM (P < 0.001), OM (P < 0.001) and CP (P < 0.001), milk production (P < 0.001), NDF (P < 0.001), and GHG emission estimation (P < 0.001). The intake and rumination rates of DM and NDF showed a linear decrease (P < 0.001) with level of tannin in the diets. In the experimental conditions, the inclusion of condensed tannin extracted from Schinopsis brasiliensis in pornunça silages, at levels up to 2.4% DM basis, promotes a decrease in intake of DM (DMI) and OM (OMI) and milk production as decreases GHG emissions in Saanen goats.
