Effect of commercial tannin and a pornunça (Manihot spp.) silage‐based diet on the fatty acid profile of Saanen goats’ milk

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance, milk composition, blood and urinary biochemical parameters and milk fatty acid profile of Saanen goats fed pornunça silage‐based diets containing different levels of tannin (11, 28, 36 and 44 g/kg dry matter). Intake of feed, milk production, milk composition and biochemical parameters were affected (P < 0.05). The content of 10:0, 12:0 and 14:0 fatty acids decreased, while those of 18:0, cis‐9 18:1, trans‐11 18:1, cis‐9, trans‐11 18:2 and cis‐9, cis‐12, c… Show more

“…First, triglycerides from the diet (LA 85%; ALA 93%, [11]) are degraded into free FAs, expressed as rumen-escaped PUFAs in the mammary gland (elucidated above), thereafter undergoing de novo FA synthesis and secreted as short-and medium-chain FAs in milk (Sc and Mc FAs). Lower CLA and VA contents were found in milk from Saanen goats fed Pornunca silage-based diets containing different levels of tannins (11,28,36 and 44 g/kg DM) [42]. It seems likely that the dietary tannins encouraged de novo FA synthesis to transform CLA and VA to Sc and Mc FAs.…”

“…The use of forages preserved as silage is a common practice in sheep farming. However, little research has been done on the potential influence of silages produced with old man saltbush (Ben Salem et al, 2010), buffelgrass (ll et al, 2017, gliricidia (Oliveira et al, 2018) and pornunça (Lucena et al, 2018), which are adapted to the semi-arid environment, on the liver and kidney functions when offered in diets for small ruminants such as lambs. Such investigations are necessary, considering the possible toxic effects of plants caused by antinutritional factors, which affect animal health and production and, consequently, the economic and social condition of producers.…”
