Curcumin is an effective wound healing agent in burn therapy, but due to its low bioavailability, it is required to be formulated for topical therapy. Liposomal nanocarriers are developed as stable and efficient dermal delivery systems. In this study, we prepared curcumin-propylene glycol liposomes (Cur-PgL) to treat animals subjected to second degree burns. The characterization tests confirmed the production of monodisperse nanoliposomes of average size of about 145 nm with high entrapment efficiency percentage and a sustained release behavior. TEM analysis of nanocarriers showed no aggregation in long time storage up to 60 days. The biocompatibility of the Cur-PgL formulation was evaluated by ISO standards. We found that Cur-PgL 0.3% was the effective dose in injured rats without any side effects on intact skin. The cytotoxicity of the Cur-PgL 0.3% nanovesicles was also assessed on human dermal fibroblast (HDF) cells. The results showed no detectable cytotoxicity, but considerable cytotoxicity was observed in higher concentration of 1.5 and 3 mg/ml of free and PgL forms of curcumin. Eight days of application of Cur-PgL on burned rats resulted in a significant (P<0.001) recovery of wound repair parameters, and after 18 days, wound contraction occurred significantly (P < 0.001) compared to the other groups. The antibacterial activity of the Cur-PgL formulation was found to be similar to the silver sulfadiazine (SSD) cream 1% regarding the inhibition of the bacterial growth. In conclusion, the low dose of curcumin nanoliposomal formulation efficiently improved injuries and infections of burn wounds and it can be considered in burn therapy.

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the potentials of egg lecithin (egg-l) and soy lecithin (soy-l) liposomes in antioxidative and wound healing properties. Materials & methods: The suspensions of egg-l and soy-l were prepared using the fusion technique. The free radical scavenging activity of both lecithin liposomes was evaluated by DPPH and ABTS methods. Tissue staining was used to assess wound-healing parameter. Results: Liposomal lecithins showed an increasing trend of 1–10 mg/ml in radical-scavenging activities (p < 0.0001). Wound-healing assessments showed a significant effect (p < 0.0001) in treatment with topical lecithin liposomes. The results of wound healing also showed better outcomes of egg-l in comparison with phenytoin 1% cream. Conclusion: Antioxidant lecithin liposomes may enhance the treatment of wound injuries.

BackgroundAluminum phosphide (AlP) is used as pesticide in some countries for protection of stored grains. Human poisoning with AlP due to suicide attempt or accidental environmental exposure is associated with very high mortality partially due to development of severe metabolic acidosis. Previous studies have shown that hemoglobin has high buffering capacity and erythrocytes can potentially be used for management of metabolic acidosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fresh packed red blood cells (RBC) transfusion on survival and cardiovascular function in AlP-poisoned rats.Methodology/Principal findingsRats were poisoned with AlP by gavage. Fresh packed RBC was transfused via tail vein after AlP administration. Acid-base balance, vital signs and mortality was assessed and compared in experimental groups. Infusion of fresh packed RBC (1.5 ml) one hour after AlP (4–15 mg/kg) intoxication was associated with a significant decrease in mortality rate. Packed RBC infusion improved blood pH, HCO3-, Na+ and Ca2+ levels. Plasma troponin level was also reduced and ECG changes were reversed following packed RBC infusion in AlP intoxicated rats.ConclusionsOur results showed that fresh RBC transfusion could ameliorate metabolic acidosis and enhance survival in AlP-poisoned rat. We assume that an increase in pool of RBCs may modulate acid-base balance or potentially chelate AlP-related toxic intermediates via phosphine-hemoglobin interaction.

Background Biofilm formation is an important causative factor in the expansion of the carious lesions in the enamel. Hence, new approaches to efficient antibacterial agents are highly demanded. This study was conducted to evaluate the antimicrobial-biofilm activity of chitosan hydrogel (CS gel), zinc oxide/ zeolite nanocomposite (ZnONC) either separately or combined together [ZnONC / CS gel (ZnONC-CS)] against Streptococcus mutans biofilm. Results MTT assay demonstrated that the ZnONC-CS exhibits a non-cytotoxic effect (> 90% cell viability) toward human gingival fibroblast cells at different dosages (78.1–625 μg/mL) within 72 h. In comparison with CS gel and ZnONC, ZnONC-CS was superior at biofilm formation and metabolic activity reduction by 33 and 45%, respectively; (P < 0.05). The field emission scanning electron microscopy micrographs of the biofilms grown on the enamel slabs were largely in concordance with the quantitative biofilm assay results. Consistent with the reducing effect of ZnONC-CS on biofilm formation, the expression levels of gtfB, gtfC, and ftf significantly decreased. Conclusions Taken together, excellent compatibility coupled with an enhanced antimicrobial effect against S. mutans biofilm has equipped ZnONC-CS as a promising candidate for dental biofilm control.

It has been proposed carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) intoxication due to the production of free radicals and serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) overload results hepatotoxicity. Phosphatidylserine (PS) has shown antioxidant activity in numerous studies.Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate the effects of PS liposomes treatment against the CCl 4 -induced hepatotoxicity in a rat model. Male Wistar rats were treated with PS (10 mg/kg, oral) or phosphatidylcholine liposomes (PC) (10 mg/kg, oral) for 3 days before CCl 4 (2 ml/kg; ip once on the third day) injection. The serum level of ALT, AST, and ALP were measured. Also, antioxidant assays were performed.Administration of PS with CCl 4 significantly inhibited alterations in the serum levels of AST, ALP ( ** P < 0.01), and ALT ( *** P < 0.001) compared with control group. Furthermore, measurement of malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels indicated that PS significantly reduced reactive oxygen species. The results of the present study showed the hepatoprotective effects of PS against CCl 4 -induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Aim: To evaluate the antimicrobial effects of photoexcited silver sulfadiazine nanoliposomes (AgSD-NLs) doped by curcumin (AgSD-NLs@Cur) on Acinetobacter baumannii. Materials & methods: Following characterization, the cytotoxic and hemolytic activities of AgSD-NLs@Cur were evaluated. The antimicrobial activities of AgSD-NLs@Cur-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) were determined. Histopathological examination of the burn wound sites of infected mice treated with photoexcited AgSD-NLs@Cur was assessed. Results: No significant cytotoxic and hemolytic activities were observed. There was a decrease in the Acinetobacter baumannii count in planktonic and biofilm forms and the gene expression level using AgSD-NLs@Cur-aPDT (p < 0.05). Histopathological analysis indicated the epidermis developed markedly and the bacterial load decreased significantly after aPDT. Conclusion: Photoexcited AgSD-NLs@Cur has an antimicrobial potential against A. baumannii.
