treatments and twelve repetitions, with the objective to evaluate the behavior, physiological responses and the performance of the animals. The average temperatures of the experimental period were 21.5°C and 31.3°C, respectively, in thermal comfort and heat stress. Swine under heat stress remain significantly little time in the position in foot, more time in the lying position, little time in the feeder, more time in the water through, more time in the lying position in the water through and more time sleeping in relation to those kept in thermal comfort. Swine under heat stress had presented energy, protein, lysine and ration intake, weight gain and feed: gain ratio reduced and had presented minor weight of organs, except of the stomach, and had presented increased respiratory frequency and rectal and surface temperatures. Swine under thermal comfort had presented greater efficiency of use of the protein and energy and greater daily protein and fat depositions in the carcass. Temperatures that provoke heat stress affects negatively the behavior of growing swine. Suínos sob estresse por calor permaneceram significativamente menos tempo na posição em pé, mais tempo na posição deitado, menos tempo no comedouro, mais tempo no bebedouro, mais tempo na posição deitado no bebedouro e mais tempo dormindo em relação àqueles mantidos sob conforto térmico. Suínos sob estresse por calor apresentaram consumos de energia, proteína, lisina e ração, ganho de peso e conversão alimentar reduzidos e apresentaram menores pesos de órgãos, exceto do estômago, e freqüência respiratória e temperaturas retal e de superfície aumentadas. Utilizou-se a equação y(t) = (y0 -q/k) e -kt + q/k onde, y(t) é a concentração isotópica no tempo desejado, y0 a concentração isotópica inicial existente no tecido, k é uma constante de troca isotópica com unidade 1/tempo, t é unidade de tempo e q é a taxa de entrada de metabólitos que contém carbono, com valores de δ‰/tempo. Para fígado de galinhas que tiveram a ração de ciclo fotossintético C4 substituída por dieta C3 obteve-se a equação δ 13 C = -24,74‰ + 12,37‰ e -0.237(nT) , com meia-vida (T) de 2,9 dias. O patamar de equilíbrio de substituição do carbono foi alcançado em -24,48‰, de modo que praticamente 98,4% do conteúdo isotópico do C4 no fígado foi substituído por C3 após 5,6 meias-vidas. The authors suggest a theorical and experimental model for determining the relative enrichment results, delta per thousand (δ‰) of the 13 C/ 12 C ratio as a function of time for different tissues. The following equation was used: y(t) = (y0 -q/k) e -kt + q/k where, y(t) is the isotopic concentration at time t, y0 is the initial isotopic concentration in the tissue, k is the turnover constant expressed in 1/time, and q is the input of metabolites which contain carbon expressed in δ‰/time. The equation below was obtained from the analysis of hen livers, the carbon-4 photosynthetic cycle ration of which was switched to a carbon-3 diet: δ 13 C = -24.74‰ + 12.37‰ e -0.237(nT) with 2.9 day half-life. The carbon switching steady-state was reached at -24.48‰ so that nearly 98.4% of the C4 isotopic content in the liver was replaced by C3 after 5.6 half-lives. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho e as características quantitativas de carcaça de suínos machos castrados, mantidos em ambiente de conforto térmico e alimentados com dietas contendo diferentes níveis de ractopamina. Foram utilizados 48 animais, com peso médio inicial de 67,0±2,7kg, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso composto por quatro níveis de ractopamina (0, 5, 10 e 20ppm) e seis repetições, com dois animais cada. O período experimental teve duração de 28 dias. A temperatura do ar obtida foi de 20,9±2,9°C, a umidade relativa foi de 86,7±7,3%, e o Índice de Temperatura de Globo e Umidade foi de 69,6±4,0. O peso final dos animais e o consumo de ração não foram influenciados (P>0,05) pelos tratamentos. Os níveis de ractopamina influenciaram (P<0,05) o ganho de peso diário e a conversão alimentar dos suínos. Observou-se redução linear (P<0,05) da espessura de toucinho e aumento da profundidade de músculo e da porcentagem de carne magra na carcaça de acordo com o aumento dos níveis de ractopamina na dieta. O peso e o rendimento de carcaça quente e a área de olho de lombo não foram influenciados (P>0,05) pelos tratamentos. Concluiu-se que o nível ótimo de inclusão de ractopamina na dieta de suínos machos castrados e mantidos em ambiente termoneutro é de 20ppm.

Bovine meat and bone meal (MBM) was widely used in animal diets until outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encefalopathy (BSE) occurred in some countries. It has not been confirmed yet whether or not BSE may be transmitted to man through chicken meat originated from poultry that had been fed diets containing MBM. Therefore, consumers nowadays express preference for meat originated from birds fed exclusively vegetable diets. This study analyzed samples of major breast muscle (Pectoralis major) using mass spectrometry of stable isotopes (carbon and nitrogen) as a means to assess the presence of MBM in broiler diets, a technique that might be used in the certification of poultry quality. During the past few years, there has been considerable interest on the effects of stocking density on broiler behavior and immunity. Stress may cause immunodeficiency by affecting cell and humoral responses, as well as body weight decrease, and foot-pad dermatitis. The aim of this study was to study histomorphological changes of the bursa of Fabricius in broilers submitted to three different stocking densities (10, 15, and 20 birds/m²) from one to 42 days of age. Three birds from each group were sacrifieced on days 7 and 42. The bursa was collected, fixed, and processed for histomorphometric assessment using a Kontrom KS 400 image analyzer. Data were analyzed by Biostat 3.0 (Tukey Test). The results of average cortical area percentage in bursal follicles of 6-week-old birds were 45.12a (10 birds/m²), 30.43b (15 birds/m²), and 23.77b (20 birds/m²). Average body weight was 2.58a kg (10 birds/m²), 2.56a Kg (15 birds/m²), and 2.47b Kg (20 birds/m²), respectively. The percentage of foot-pad dermatitis in 6-week-old birds was 3.33a (10 birds/m²), 17.76b (15 birds/m²), and 49.17c (20 birds/m²). These differences were statistically significant at a P<0.05 level. Our goal was to trace the inclusion of poultry offal meal (OM) in diets by using carbon ( 13 C/ 12 C) and nitrogen ( 15 N/ 14 N) isotopic ratios of different tissues in order to contribute for the development of an independent technology for the certification of the feeding of broilers reared on diets with no addition of animal ingredients. Eighty one-dayold chicks were randomly distributed into five experimental treatments, that is, diets containing increasing levels of OM inclusion (0, 2, 4, 8 and 16% OM), with four replicates of four birds each. At 42 days of age, four birds per treatment (n=4) were randomly selected, weighed, and sacrificed to collect breast muscle (Pectoralis major), keel and tibia samples to determine their isotopic ratios ( 13 C/ 12 C e 15 N/ 14 N). It was observed that 13 C and 15 N enrichment increased as a function of increasing OM inclusion in all diets. The analyses of the Pectoralis major showed that that only treatments with 8 and 16% OM dietary inclusion were different form those in the control group (0% OM). On the other hand, when the keel and tibia were analyzed, in addition to 8 and 16% OM), the treatment with 4% OM inclusion was also different from the control group. The use of isotopic ratios of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes is an alternative to trace OM inclusion in broiler diets as it is capable of tracing OM levels below those usually practiced by the poultry industry in Brazil.

The objective of this study was to determine the energy values of soybean oil (SBO) and tallow (T) combined in different ratios, and to evaluate their effects on the performance, body composition, and serum lipid levels of starter broilers. In experiment I, a digestibility trial was performed to determine the energy value of the SOB and T mixtures using 100 12 - to 21 -day-old broilers. In experiment II, 930 one-day-old broilers were used. Treatments consisted of the inclusion of 4% SBO and T inclusions at the following ratios: 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, 100:0. Each treatment included six replicates. In experiment I, AME and AMEn linearly increased (P<0.01), as SBO participation in the mixture increased. In experiment II, the different lipid ratios quadratically influenced (P<0.01) body weight and weight gain at 21 days of age, increasing up to the ratio of 65.87:34.13. Serum lipids linearly decreased (P<0.05) as SOB inclusion in the diet increased. It was concluded that AME and AMEn of SBO and T at ratios of 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0 were 7.882 and 7.542, 8.384 and 8.076, 8.701 and 8.385, 8.801 and 8.727, and 9.478 and 9.271 kcal/kg, respectively. The best performance with no detrimental effect on carcass yield was obtained with the mixture of 75% SBO with 25% T. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a silagem de grãos úmidos de milho (SGUM) como ingrediente nas rações de frangos de corte, em substituição total aos grãos secos de milho (GSM), no desempenho, no rendimento da carcaça, no peso dos órgãos e na morfologia intestinal. No primeiro experimento, 600 pintainhos machos Ross foram distribuídos em blocos casualizados, com seis tratamentos (A: GSM de 1-42 dias; B: SGUM de 1-42 dias; C: SGUM de 1-7 dias e GSM de 8-42 dias; D: SGUM de 1-14 dias e GSM de 15-42 dias; E: SGUM de 1-21 dias e GSM de 22-42 dias; F: GSM + água de 1-42 dias), com quatro repetições, de 25 aves. No segundo experimento, foram utilizados 24 pintainhos machos Ross, distribuídos ao acaso, em dois tratamentos (com e sem SGUM) e 12 repetições cada. A SGUM até 21 dias de idade não interferiu no desempenho das aves e no rendimento de carcaça aos 42 dias de idade. Frangos alimentados com SGUM apresentaram maior peso relativo do fígado, menor largura das vilosidades do duodeno e íleo, maior altura de vilosidade no jejuno aos 21 dias, e menor profundidade de cripta no duodeno e no íleo aos 42 dias de idade. A SGUM pode ser considerada um ingrediente em dietas de frangos de corte até 21 dias de idade, por não interferir no peso final das aves, no rendimento de carcaça e peso dos órgãos.
