This paper's aim was to identify the main factors influencing secondary education dropout. The data are based on a historical series developed by the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) and a large survey conducted in Minas Gerais, Brazil, which collected diverse information from 3,418 interviewees (including students and dropouts). Cox proportional hazards regression models were estimated to identify potential correlations between intra and extra-school factors and early dropout. Another model used PNAD database, for which a Logit model was estimated, to verify nondropout rates in high schools in Minas Gerais. Some significant factors are highlighted in the results explaining dropout, such as: difficulties faced with subjects, desire for a different school, perception of better job opportunities if studies are completed, and importance assigned to school choice.
This paper estimates an equation for fertilizer demand in Brazil, considering the time period from 1970 to 2002. Co-integration analysis procedures have been used and they show that just the level model (LSO method), valid for long term, presents good econometrics results. Fertilizer demand is inelastic to both price fluctuations and rural credit supplied. These results are consistent with the international estimates and they also confirm the importance of fertilizer as an input for the Brazilian agriculture
This paper analyzes the effect of reducing pre-harvest burning of sugar cane on the population's respiratory health in Brazil. We collected data for the municipalities in the state of São Paulo for two different periods: 2000, before the state law requiring the gradual elimination of sugar cane area utilizing pre-burning, and 2007. We used panel models for inpatient visits due to respiratory diseases, outpatient visits for inhalation procedures and length of stay for inpatient visits due to respiratory diseases, controlling for the endogeneity between health and pollution. The results show that increasing the area of raw sugar cane harvested reduces the number of inpatient visits and does not affect the number of inhalation procedures or length of stay.

The impact of the Experimental 6th Grade Project – SME/RJ

The aim of this study is to assess the short-term impact of the sixth-grade experimental project and the factors that mediate this impact. The main feature of the project proposed by the Department of Municipal Education (SME) of Rio de Janeiro, in 2011, is its expansion up to the 6th grade the elementary education, with only one lead teacher to teach the main subjects. To evaluate the project, we used the differences-in-differences method with propensity scorematching. The results indicate an improvement of 0.16 standard deviations in mathematics at the end of the first half of the project, for the schools that entered in the 6th Grade Experimental, in 2014. The main mechanisms that explain performance improvement are the improved climate in the classroom, in pedagogical autonomy and in the training of teachers.
keywords: Elementary School; Education Assessment; 6° Grade Experimental Project; Student Performance.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine if child labour can have long-term consequences on children’s health status. Design/methodology/approach To capture this relationship, this paper uses the Brazilian National Household Survey (PNAD) conducted in 1998, 2003 and 2008, structured as a pseudo panel and estimated using a fractional response model. Findings The results show that child labour is negatively associated with child’s health status, and the longer the hours worked, the worse is the child’s health status. The authors also observe that hazardous labour had a three times higher negative effect on the child’s health and those who worked in service sectors are more prone to having a worse health status. Originality/value The study shows that different children’s occupations may have very different impacts on children’s health and indicates that despite the fact that Brazil has a strict law prohibiting child labour, the share of children working is still high and this work has a negative impact on child’s health.
