This study projects the economic impacts of COVID-19 outbreak on the Brazilian economy using a dynamic interregional computable general equilibrium model. We considered two scenarios. The first scenario has two channels of transmission over the economic system: a negative shock of labour supply due to the rates of morbidity and mortality caused by the pandemic, and a
Abstract. This paper analyses the consumption patterns of tourists coming from different domestic origins and choosing other domestic destinations in Brazil, in terms of expenditure level and composition. We also look at different alternatives of financing tourist expenditures and their implications for the net multipliers in an integrated framework. We use survey data for domestic tourism in Brazil to consolidate an interregional matrix of expenditures by tourists. We then use an interregional inputoutput system for Brazil to compute the tourism multipliers effects based on alternative hypotheses for the sources of financing of expenditures by tourists. The results are analyzed and their implications for regional inequality in the country are discussed.
In this paper we present the interisland input-output system for the Azores. It includes the economy of the nine islands of the archipelago, considering 25 different economic activities. The paper also analyses the impacts of the main drivers of the islands economy incorporating both spillover and feedback effects in the evaluation of the multipliers: i) dairy and beef exports; ii) external public support; and iii) tourism, both from the rest of the country and from abroad. It is shown that: i) the economic structure of the islands is quite different from each other; ii) the specific economic base of the islands are also different and, as expected, the biggest islands not only capture an important part of the impact of external pushes done in smaller islands but also they constitute important drivers of smaller islands.
Abstract
Abstract The need for changes in the current energy matrix is a reality due to the possibility of a shortage of fossil fuels and the environmental damage caused by emissions related to fossil fuel use. The correct prescription of public policies for energy markets depends on the knowledge of demand elasticities. Hence, the aim of this work was to estimate the main determinants of light fuel demands in Brazil. Dynamic and non-dynamic estimators were used, and the results indicated that both demands respond more to changes in gasoline prices than changes in ethanol prices. Therefore, public policies that aim to change consumption patterns should focus on gasoline prices.
