One of the most malignant skin cancers is melanoma-it has a high metastatic potential as well as a high resistance to treatment, which results in a high mortality rate. The basic method for treating early-stage melanomas is surgery alone. If surgery is not possible or as an adjuvant therapy, radiotherapy is used; chemotherapy is rarely used because of its low response rate (Perera et al., 2014). One promising therapeutic strategy is targeted therapy that involves blocking the BRAF kinase (about 50% of patients have a BRAF mutation), which results in a disruption of the MAPK signaling pathway and slows down the proliferation of cancer cells (Zaman et al., 2019). In addition, research is being conducted into the use of antimelanoma vaccines (Vasquez et al., 2017). A b s t r a c tBackground: Radial access during coronary angiography has become an increasingly popular alternative to femoral access. The procedural outcomes and complications of these two approaches have been thoroughly evaluated; however, no studies have focused exclusively on the postprocedural quality of life of patients.
Aim:To determine and compare both methods from the patient's point of view.Methods: Data were gathered from 165 consecutive patients scheduled for elective coronary angiography (from October 2011 to June 2012). The choice of the access site was left at operator's discretion. Femoral and radial groups consisted of 91 and 74 patients, respectively. Quality of life was assessed by the Short Form of the McGill Questionnaire and a self-designed questionnaire (Questionnaire II) consisting of eight questions evaluating the procedure-specific aspects of recovery time. After three months from index hospitalisation post-discharge interviews were conducted using a modified version of Questionnaire II with an additional two questions. Conclusions: The quality of life of patients who underwent coronary angiography from radial access was remarkably better in terms of pain characteristic and overall discomfort.
The induction of apoptosis is one of the main goals of the designed anti-cancer therapies. In recent years, increased attention has been paid to the physical factors such as magnetic fields and to the natural bioactive compounds and the possibilities using them in medicine. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-tumor effect of caffeic or chlorogenic acid in combination with a moderate-strength static magnetic field on C32 melanoma cells by assessing the effect of both factors on the apoptotic process. The apoptosis of the C32 cells was evaluated using a flow cytometry analysis. The expression of the apoptosis-associated genes was determined using the RT-qPCR technique. The caspase activity and the concentration of the oxidative damage markers were also measured. It was found that phenolic acids and a static magnetic field trigger the apoptosis of the C32 cells and also affect the expression of the genes encoding the apoptosis regulatory proteins. In conclusion, our study indicated that both of the phenolic acids and a static magnetic field can be used supportively in the treatment of melanoma and that caffeic acid is more pro-apoptotic than chlorogenic acid.
Background: Scientific research has confirmed the biological activity of resveratrol, which includes its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective and anticancer properties. There is no known interaction between a static magnetic field and resveratrol that can modulate resveratrol’s effect on cells. Thus, the main aim of our research was to assess the effect of the co-exposure to resveratrol and a static magnetic field on the oxidation–reduction homeostasis of C32 and Colo829 melanoma cells. Methods: The studies consisted of determining the activity of the antioxidant enzymes that constitute the body’s first line of defense—SOD, GPx and CAT—and determining the lipid peroxidation product—MDA—and the value of the total antioxidant status of melanoma cells. Results and conclusions: Resveratrol was shown to exhibit anticancer properties, possibly through the ferroptosis of melanoma cells. A static magnetic field was also found to abolish the anticancer properties of resveratrol and to have a protective effect against melanoma cells by restoring the redox balance in the cells.
