The speed of development and food consumption of four lepidopterous pest species of cabbage crops were determined, namely Mamestra brassicae L. (Noctuidae), Pieris rapae L., Pieris brassicae L. (Pieridae) and Evergestis forficalis L. (Pyralidae). The relative feeding capacity of these species as a variable in yield loss equations in crop loss assessment was established and discussed.
The Insect Growth Regulators with juvenile hormone activity, fenoxycarb and epofenonane, were applied either to separate apple trees, which were artificially inoculated with Adoxophyes orana (F.v.R.) and Pandemis heparana (Denn. & Schiff.), or in apple orchards infested with several naturally occurring leafroller species. The susceptibility of leafrollers to fenoxycarb was very high and the foliar residue remained active for at least 4 weeks. The leafroller parasites Apanteles ater (Ratzeburg) and Colpoclypeus florus (Walker), during their development in or on the host, appeared to be less susceptible to both epofenonane and fenoxycarb than the host itself.
To obtain more information on the threshold values which have to be used in Brussels sprouts, the quantitative damage in this crop, as a result of leaf area reduction by caterpillars was studied in a field trial. In this experiment the insect injury was simulated by artificial defoliation. Leaf area reduction up to 60% at any moment of the growing season did not influence the weight of the stem of the plants, nor the number of sprouts/plant. During a part of the growing season partial defoliation did however result in a significantly lower weight of sprouts/plant. The first 4 weeks after transplanting, the Brussels sprouts plants had a very high capacity to compensate for defoliation. Between the 5th and 13th week after transplanting, a significant reduction in yield occurred after a partial leaf reduction. The relation between the rate of defoliation and the loss of weight of sprouts per plant was lineair. During the most sensitive period (July), 60% defoliation induced a maximum yield reduction of 35%. When partial defoliation was carried out 15 weeks after transplanting, or later, no effect on the yield was observed. As Brussels sprouts plants demonstrate to be rather insensitive to leaf reduction during a part of the growing season, it is expected that natural infestations of leaf‐eating caterpillars in Brussels sprouts, at population densities as occurred in the Netherlands in 1981, will only induce a minor quantitative damage. After sprout‐formation qualitative damage will, however, be more important. For a better understanding of the threshold values to be used in Brussels sprouts, a better knowledge of the qualitative damage to the sprouts will be needed.
The relation between artificial defoliation, simulating insect injury to the leaves, and yield was studied in spring cabbage cv. “Extra vroege spitse” to obtain information on the threshold values to be used in this crop. Two field trials, set up as randomized block designs with six replicates were situated on a clay soil. The effects of four percentages of defoliation (0, 25, 50 and 75%), applied at four or five treatment dates during the preheading stages of the crop, were investigated. In both experiments sensitivity to defoliation increased during the period from transplanting to head‐formation, remaining on a maximum after plants had reached a total leaf area of approximately 2000 cm2. In plants of this size 5% reduction of the leaf area caused a yield reduction of 3%.
