Wild Oat Control in Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass

Abstract: MSMA (Monosodium methanearsonate) applied postemergence at 4.5, 6.7, or 9.0 kg/ha controlled wild oat (Avena fatuaL.) in new plantings of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensisL. ‘Pennstar’) and in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenneL. ‘Reveille,’ ‘Pennfine’). MSMA at 4.5 kg/ha was almost as effective as the higher rates in controlling wild oat. MSMA at 2.2 kg/ha was less effective in some experiments. Visual injury to the perennial grasses was negligible. Satisfactory grass stands developed at all MSMA rates. Peren… Show more

“…Postemergence application of diclofop and linuron was more phytotoxic on the crops which is similar to the results reported by LEE (1975) and DURUTHAN (1976). They reported that most herbicides when applied as postemergence are generally phytotoxic.…”

“…Considerable reduction in seed yield potential may have occurred because of the late application date. In other trials, ryegrass seed yield increases associated with wild oat control have ranged from 13-82% (Barber 1976;Evans et al 1976;Lee 1975).…”

“…Establishment of warm-season grasses is often hindered by weed competi tion during early seedling growth. Heavy weed infestation during early growth can reduce forage yields or cause complete stand failure (10,21,22,23,24). Presently, herbicides available for use at seeding of warm-and coolseason grasses are limited.…”

“…Atrazine [6-chloro-A'-ethyl-N' -(1 -methylethyl) -1,3,5 -triazine -2,4 -diamine] has been used during seeding of switchgrass (18,23) and big bluestem (23). Selective control of wild oats (Avena fatua L. # 3 AVE FA) in seedings of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) was achieved using MSMA (monosodium salt of methylarsonic acid) (22). Weeds were selectively controlled in bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.]…”
