Triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) is a relatively new grain and forage crop, but no information is available on agronomic performance of this crop relative to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rye (Secale cereale L.) grown in the southeastern U. S. A field experiment was conducted during three growing seasons, 1973–1975, on a Decatur silty clay loam soil (Rhodic Paleudult) to provide comparative data on seven triticale cultivars and one recommended cultivar each of wheat and rye. Results indicated that forage yields of two winter‐type triticales, ‘6TA 131’ and ‘6TA 385’, were equal to that of ‘Winter‐grazer 70’ rye and significantly better than ‘Arthur’ wheat or rye for grain yield. Clipping for forage reduced grain yied 15 to 20%, in intermediate types, 9 to 12% in wheat and winter triticales, and less than 4% in rye. Winter triticales were taller or equal to rye in height and also showed relatively more lodging than wheat and intermediate types. Test weight of wheat was highest. The protein content in dry green forage ranged from 24 to 27% among all the entries. Triticale cultivars averaged 14.4% protein in the whole grain while wheat and rye averaged 13.7 and 13.2%, respectively.

Calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) play an important role in growth and development of plants however, their effects on soybean seed production and seed quality in late harvested seed crop has not been studied. Therefore, influence of three rates of calcium (0, 50, 100 kg ha −1 ), and phosphorus (0, 45, 90 kg ha −1 ) was investigated on seed production and seed quality in soybeans (cv. 'Hutcheson') harvested at three stages: (HS-1 = physiological maturity-yellow/brown pods; HS-2 = harvestable maturity-brown/dried pods; and HS-3 = harvested 15 days after HS-2). Results showed that yield components, seed yield and seed quality harvested at HS-1 and HS-2 stages were similar but were significantly higher than seed harvested at HS-3 stage. Calcium applied at 100 kg ha −1 significantly increased harvest index, yield, and quality of seed. Phosphorus applied at 90 kg ha −1 significantly increased the number of pods per plant and seed yield. Seed quality (viability and germination % after cold test) was enhanced with application of Ca at 100 and P at 90 kg ha −1 in comparison to the control. Application of Ca and P significantly improved soybean seed yield and quality but this beneficial effect did not prevent decrease in seed quality if harvesting was delayed.

Triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) is being used for supplemental winter grazing and has potential to be a grain crop in the southeastern U. S. There is little information on the effect of cultural practices on the agronomic performance of triticale. An experiment was conducted on a Decatur silty clay loam soil (Rhodic Paleudult) to study the effects of two row spacings (12.5 and 25 cm) and three seeding rates (50, 75, and 100 kg/ha) for two growing seasons on the performance of a triticale cultivar, 6TA 131, in comparison with commonly grown Wrens Abruzzi rye (Secale cereale L.) and Arthur 71 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.).Differences in forage yields due to row spacing and seeding rates of triticale, wheat, and rye were highly significant. The optimum rate of seeding for triticale appears to be 75 and 100 kg/ha for grain and forage production, respectively, when planted at 12.5‐cm row spacings. In wheat and rye, seeding rates of 75 and 100 kg/ha produced significantly more forage, whereas seeding at 50 kg /ha was adequate for grain yields. Clipping effects on triticale and wheat grain yields were inconsistent, but reduced rye yield considerably.

Grain sorghum can substitute for corn as a full season crop and replace soybeans in double cropping systems with wheat in the southeastern United States. Relatively few studies have been conducted to measure the response of grain sorghum to tillage, weed control method, and row spacing. These experiments were designed to determine the effects of weed control method and row spacing on no-till planted grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench 'G1516-BR') after wheat (Triticum aestivum L. 'Coker 68-15') and crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L. 'Bigbee') grown for winter forage in comparison to sorghum planted on a conventionally prepared seedbed. The experiment included 45, 60, and 90cm row spacings and three weed control regimes: none, mechanical, and chemical. Grain sorghum planted no-till in crimson clover or wheat sod yielded considerably more grain than conventionally planted sorghum. Grain sorghum produced significantly higher yields in 45-cm rows than in 60-and 90-cm row spacings with all three planting methods. Effects of chemical weed control on weed population with all tillage methods and on grain yield with conventional tillage were significant. There were no significant differences in grain protein content due to row spacing or weed control method.
