Anna Doyle Wheeler was a nineteenth‐century, Irish‐born socialist and feminist. She and another Irish‐born socialist and feminist, William Thompson, produced a book‐length critique in 1825, Appeal of One Half the Human Race, Women: Against the Pretensions of the Other Half, Men, to Retain Them in Political, and Thence in Civil and Domestic, Slavery: In Reply to a Paragraph of Mr. Mill's Celebrated “Article on Government,” to refute the claims of liberal philosopher James Mill in 1820 that women did not need to be enfranchised. In so doing the Appeal undermined the philosophical credibility of Mill's liberal utilitarianism. The Appeal exposed the hypocrisy of the language of contract (whether social, sexual, or marriage) by showing that men's freedom and claims to rights presupposed the unfreedom and sexual subjugation of women. The article argues that the Appeal was an original formulation of feminist political theory that still retains its relevance in the twenty‐first century.

“…Découvrant les théories maternalistes américaines des années 90 (Scott 1988 ;Ladd-Taylor 1994), mais ignorant les auteures canadiennes qui utilisent ces concepts et étudient ces associations depuis plusieurs années (Brandt et Black 1999 ;Cohen 1985Cohen et 1997Black 1989), l'auteure propose de réinterpréter son action. Elle inclut ainsi l'action de la FNSJB dans ce courant maternaliste (qui attribue une place déterminante à la maternité, comme vision du monde), qu'elle distingue, à la suite de Cott (1989) et de Ladd-Taylor (1994 Nous tâcherons d'approfondir cette perspective dans l'analyse que nous en ferons, même s'il ne s'agit pas de suggérer que la FNSJB occupe à elle seule toute la sphère du féminisme québécois pendant la première moitié du xx e siècle. Au contraire, elle en constitue une manifestation parmi d'autres, alors que s'affirment en parallèle d'autres formes de féminisme, et c'est à ce titre qu'elle nous intéresse.…”

Les auteures proposent dans leur texte une analyse des cours d'instruction civique mis sur pied par la Fédération nationale Saint-Jean-Baptiste et donnés aux femmes du Québec de 1921 à 1926. Elles dévoilent le contexte politique et social qui entoure ce projet, ainsi que les modalités et le contenu de tels cours. Deux hypothèses guident leur analyse : selon la première, ces cours sont mis sur pied pour permettre aux femmes du Québec de voter en toute connaissance de cause aux élections fédérales, droit exercé pour la première fois en 1921, parce que ce niveau de gouvernement est perçu comme un véritable enjeu de pouvoir pour les femmes. Selon la seconde hypothèse, ce projet de cours fait partie d’une stratégie en vue d'outiller les femmes pour la politique, de façon à contrecarrer l'un des arguments des opposants au suffrage féminin au niveau provincial, celui de l'ignorance des femmes dans le domaine de la politique.In this text, authors present an analysis of the civic instruction courses that were offered to Québec women by the Saint-Jean-Baptiste National Federation between 1921 and 1926. They explore the social and political context surrounding this project and the course contents. Two hypothesis have structured their analysis: first, these courses were developed to give Québec women the knowledge and expertise necessary to use their newly acquired right to vote in an efficient manner in the federal elections, because this level of government was perceived to be a potentially strategic power base for women. According to the second hypothesis, this project aimed at providing tools and resources to enable women to challenge the widespread preconception of women's ignorance with regard to politics
