Vulnerability to the Irrelevant Sound Effect in Adult ADHD

Abstract: Objective: An ecologically valid adaptation of the irrelevant sound effect paradigm was employed to examine the relative roles of short-term memory, selective attention and sustained attention in ADHD. Method: Thirty-two adults with ADHD and 32 control participants completed a serial recall task in silence or whilst ignoring irrelevant background sound. Results: The serial recall performance in adults with ADHD was reduced relative to controls in both conditions. The degree of interference due to irrelevant so… Show more

“…The finding that attention and impulsivity problems, as observed in ADHD can interfere with learning problems whose cumulative impact may be poor acquisition of new information has been proved by various researches [39,40]. The findings of the present study also correlate with that of recent researches which indicate that ADHD causes significant impairment in performing executive functioning and reading performance [5,41,42]. Some recent findings from neuroimaging studies of ADHD have also reported structural anomalies in the cerebellum, basal ganglia, and prefrontal cortex [43,44].…”

“…Lack of perseverance is conceptualized as "the ability to remain focused on a task that may be boring or difficult'' (Whiteside and Lynam, 2001), a behavior being potentially associated with poor executive performances, and with difficulties in overcoming proactive interference in working memory promoting intrusive thoughts and mind wandering (Gay et al, 2008. Recent works have documented that adults with ADHD had low resistance to distraction during working memory task implying sustained attention (Marx et al, 2011;Pelletier et al, 2013). An impairment in working memory is the hallmark of the ADHD neuropsychological profile.…”

“…A few studies have found that masking broadband noise can enhance memory of spoken words in children with ADHD (Söderlund, Sikström, Loftesnes, & Sonuga‐Barke, ) and help them keep focus on a visual task (Lederer et al., ), presumably by helping these individuals reach a more optimal level of domain release (cf. Sikström & Söderlund, ), but opposing results have also been reported (e.g., Pelletier, Hodgetts, Lafleur, Vincent, & Tremblay, ; Jin, Liu, Li, & Lan, ). Pelletier et al.…”

“…Pelletier et al. () requested adult participants with ADHD and controls to undertake serial recall of visually presented sequences of items, either in silence or against a background of sound. They found that the ADHD participants were more distracted by the irrelevant sound.…”
