Visfatin levels in gingival crevicular fluid and serum before and after non-surgical treatment for periodontal diseases

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate visfatin levels at different stages of periodontal disease and in healthy tissues. In addition, the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on visfatin levels in gingival crevicular fluid and serum was investigated. Forty-five patients were divided into three groups based on clinical and radiographical findings. Group 1 comprised periodontally healthy individuals (n = 15); group 2 comprised patients with gingivitis (n = 15); and group 3 was composed of patients with… Show more

“…The influence of age on the visfatin concentration was minimized by selecting the subjects within the specified age group (25-45 years) since age is a known risk factor for both periodontitis and visfatin expression. 31 In the present study, the mean baseline salivary visfatin levels in group II and group III were 26.66 AE 2.24 and 38.22 AE 3.38 ng/mL (►Table 1, ►Fig. 1).…”

“…8 Mohamed, et al 22 (2015) reported a positive correlation between PD and visfatin levels in GCF, and they found that visfatin increased significantly the number of diseased sites. Türer, et al 23 (2015) showed that GCF and serum visfatin levels are higher in patients with chronic periodontitis than those with gingivitis and healthy controls. They also reported that visfatin levels were significantly decreased following periodontal treatment.…”

“…Bu konuda çalışılmış diğer araştırmaların sonuçları da benzerlik göstermektedir. [15][16][17][18][19][20] Tüm bu literatürler ışığında, visfatin'in periodontal hastalıklarda infeksiyon varlığının tespiti için güvenilir bir biyobelirteç olarak kullanılabileceğini söyleyebiliriz.…”
