“…These data are in agreement with two studies in hospitalised patients (Holman, 1979;Lecerf et al, 1993), although lower percentages of 20:4 n-6 were observed in PL from elderly hospitalised patients in another study (Asciutti-Moura, 1988). The data of our study suggest that in our cohort of elderly women living at home, the 20:4 n-6 dietary supply compensated both the lower 18:2 n-6 intake and possibly some weakness of the n-6 biosynthetic pathway.…”

“…As indicated above, lower percentages of 18:2 n-6 have been reported in elderly patients, but only in cohorts living in institutions or during hospitalisation (Holmann, 1979;Asciutti-Moura et al, 1988;Lecerf et al, 1993). The comparison of our population of elderly women living at home with data from the literature concerning institutionalised patients yielded interesting information.…”

“…The different classes of complex lipids -triacylglycerols, cholesteryl esters and phospholipids -have different compositions of fatty acids. The fatty acid composition of these complex lipids in the different lipoproteins has been studied in detail in healthy subjects, and shown to be similar in VLDL, LDL and HDL (10)(11), thus confirming the rapid exchange of these lipids between these lipoproteins, mediated by the transfer proteins. In contrast, in animal species that lack cholesteryl ester transfer protein, such as the rat and the pig, the fatty acid profile of cholesteryl esters in the distinct lipoproteins is different (12)(13).…”

“…Age-related changes in fatty acid profile have been described in postmeno pausal women: an increase in monounsaturated fatty acids (C l8:1 n-9 and C l6:1 n-9) and a decrease in linoleic acid (C l8:2 n-6) [17], However, the changes which may occur in plasma fatty acid profile of malnourished elderly and of elderly with coronary heart dis ease are poorly documented.…”
