IntroduzioneNumerose ricerche condotte da diversi autori (Fahn 1962, Liphschitz & Lev-Uadum 1986 hanno fatto chiarezza sull'origine geografica e sul grado di adattamento ad ambienti a clima mediterraneo e temperato di molte specie forestali che producono anelli annuali di accrescimento legnoso, deducendo che l'attività cambiale può essere messa in relazione ai fattori climatici. Secondo Ephrat 1971 l'attività cambiale sarebbe fortemente controllata dalle tempe rature invernali e dalla siccità estiva. Fra le specie adatte al clima mediterraneo la quercia da sughero (Quercus suber L.), ben nota per la produzione di su ghero formato in seguito all'attività del fellogeno o cambio subero-fellodermico, varia la sua attività cambiale in relazione ai parametri climatici (Fahn 1962, Liphschitz & Lev-Uadum 1986. Così come l'at tività cambiale di molte specie forestali, anche quella del fellogeno può essere messa in relazione ai fattori climatici e può essere studiata attraverso l'analisi de gli anelli di accrescimento annuali del sughero che, risultando leggibili, sono considerati sorgente di in formazione sui cambiamenti ambientali (Fritts 1976, Cook & Kairiukstis 1990. Fos & Barreno (1994) ri portano per alcune sugherete spagnole che le diffe renze nello spessore degli anelli di accrescimento del sughero potrebbero essere legate all'esistenza di un periodo estivo secco. In spite of the importance of cork and cork oak stands in Sicilian forests and the poten tial economic scenarios, few research works have been carried out on these systems. Given the importance of cork thickness in cork quality evaluation, the main objective of this work is to study cork growth in cork oak productive stands spread on the north (Nebrodi Mountains) and south-east (Iblei Mountains) of Sicily. Im age analysis techniques were used on cork surfaces of transverse sections of planks to measure cork rings.Dendrochronological analysis was applied to study annual fluctuation on rings growth in relation to various climate parameters in a cork cycle production. Results showed that rainfall, summer drought and temperat ure are determining factors in controlling cork growth. In siliceous areas of Nebrodi Mountains correlation between cork growth index and rainfall indicates that the rain period from May to September strongly influ ences phellogen activity. Temperature and water stress indices, on the other hand, show a negative correla tion with cork growth. In clay and evolved soils of volcanic plateau of Iblei Mountains January precipitation shows a positive correlation with cork growth index. -A plan for sustainable management is urgently required for cork oak forests. This objective is only attainable through growth models that allow us to predict the medium and long term consequences of different silvicultural treatments. In this study, we have developed height and diameter growth models for dominant cork oak trees using stem analysis data from two of the main cork producing areas in Spain. Difference forms of the Lundqvist-Korf, McDill-Amateis and Richards growth functions were tested and fitted using the generalized least squares regression method. The parameters of the equations were linked to stand characteristics in order to improve the models. The difference form of the McDill-Amateis equation was selected for height growth, while the difference form of the Richards equation with n as the free parameter was selected for diameter growth. These models increase our knowledge of the growth of this species and therefore will enable us to improve management planning in cork oak forests. growth models / Quercus suber / site index / dominant trees / sustainability Résumé -Modèles de croissance en hauteur et en diamètre pour des chênes-lièges dominants en Espagne. Un nouveau plan d'aménagement pour la gestion durable des peuplements de chêne-liège est nécessaire. Cet objectif est réalisable seulement si l'on dispose des modèles de croissance permettant de prévoir les conséquences de différents traitements sylvicoles. On a développé, sur la base des données d'analyses de tige, deux modèles pour estimer la croissance en hauteur et en diamètre des chênes-lièges dominants dans deux des régions les plus productives d'Espagne. Les équations en différences des modèles de Lundqvist-korf, Mcdill-Amateis et Richards ont été testées et ajustées en utilisant la méthode des moindres carrés généralisée. Les paramètres des équations ont été exprimés en fonction de caractéristiques des peuplements pour améliorer les modèles. La fonction de McDill-Amateis a été retenue comme modèle de la croissance en hauteur tandis qu'on a choisi l'équation de Richards avec n dans l'exposant comme paramètre libre pour modèle de la croissance en diamètre.
