In this study, we examined the chromosome number and some morphological features of strains of Stevia rebaudiana. The chromosomes were analyzed during mitosis and diakinesis, and the tetrad normality and pollen viability were also assessed. In addition, stomata and pollen were measured and some plant features were studied morphometrically. All of the strains had 2n = 22, except for two, which had 2n = 33 and 2n = 44. Pairing at diakinesis was n = 11 II for all of the diploid strains, whereas the triploid and tetraploid strains had n = 11 III and n = 11 IV , respectively. Triploid and tetraploid plants had a lower tetrad normality rate than the diploids. All of the strains had inviable pollen. Thus, the higher the ploidy number, the greater the size of the pollen and the stomata, and the lower their number per unit area. The triploid strain produced the shortest plants and the lowest number of inflorescences, whereas the tetraploid strain had the largest leaves. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the strains, with a positive correlation between the level of ploidy and all of the morphological features examined.
Mitotic chromosomes of eight populations of six species of Vernonia sensu Baker (Asteraceae, Vernonieae, section Lepidaploa , group Axilliflorae ) were studied to assess the validity of maintaining the genus as proposed currently ( sensu Baker) or of splitting it into several smaller genera ( sensu Robinson). The species were collected in areas of 'cerrado' and 'campo rupestre' in southern and central-western Brazil. The chromosome numbers were 2 n = 20-40 and karyotypic analysis showed a predominance of metacentric chromosomes, with some submetacentrics. B chromosomes were seen in one population of V. geminata . The chromosomes varied in length from 0.9 to 4.6 µ m, with a total chromatin length of 29.7-45.0 µ m and a symmetry index of 41.2-46.9%. The intrachromosomal asymmetry index varied from 0.13 to 0.29, and the interchromosomal asymmetry index varied from 0.15 to 0.21. The dispersion diagram showed that population 1 of V. geminata had the most asymmetrical karyotype. These results do not provide sufficient evidence for a conclusive cytotaxonomic discussion of Vernonia , mainly because of the impossibility of associating any infrageneric group with specific karyotypic characters, and also because of the small number of species analysed so far.
̀This paper reports on the advancement of magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) as stable dispersions of surface-modified γ-Fe(2)O(3), Fe(3)O(4), and CoFe(2)O(4) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in a hydrophobic ionic liquid, 1-n-butyl 3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BMI.NTf(2)). The MNPs were obtained via coprecipitation and were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. The surface-modified MNPs (SM-MNPs) were obtained via the silanization of the MNPs with the aid of 1-butyl-3-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]imidazolium chloride (BMSPI.Cl). The SM-MNPs were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy and by magnetic measurements. The FTIR-ATR spectra of the SM-MNPs exhibited characteristic absorptions of the imidazolium and those of the Fe-O-Si-C moieties, confirming the presence of BMSPI.Cl on the MNP surface. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the SM-MNPs were modified by at least one BMSPI.Cl monolayer. The MILs were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and magnetic measurements. The Raman and DSC results indicated an interaction between the SM-MNPs and the IL. This interaction promotes the formation of a supramolecular structure close to the MNP surface that mimics the IL structure and is responsible for the stability of the MIL. Magnetic measurements of the MILs indicated no hysteresis. Superparamagnetic behavior and a saturation magnetization of ~22 emu/g could be inferred from the magnetic measurements of a sample containing 50% w/w γ-Fe(2)O(3) SM-MNP/BMI.NTf(2).
