RESUMO -RESUMO -RESUMO -RESUMO -RESUMO -(Comparação da vegetação arbórea de cerradão e de cerrado na Reserva do Panga, Uberlândia, Minas Gerais). O estudo foi desenvolvido na Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural do Panga, localizada no Municí-pio de Uberlândia, Estado de Minas Gerais. Realizou-se, pelo método de parcelas, o levantamento florístico e a análise dos parâmetros fitossociológicos das espécies arbóreas com circunferência do tronco ≥ 15cm, numa faixa de 840m x 20m (1,68ha), abrangendo comunidades vegetais contíguas de cerradão e cerrado (sentido restrito). Foram coletadas amostras compostas de solo, numa profundidade de 0 a 10cm, em 12 diferentes parcelas, para determinar a sua composição química. Na amostragem total foram encontrados 3.137 indivíduos distribuídos em 107 espécies e 43 famílias. Nas 25 parcelas de cerradão (1,0ha) ocorreram 93 espécies, das quais Qualea grandiflora e Vochysia tucanorum apresentaram os maiores índices de valor de importância (IVI). Em 0,68ha de cerrado, ocorreram 76 espécies e 37 famílias, sendo que as espécies de maior IVI foram Qualea grandiflora e Q. parviflora. Fabaceae, Vochysiaceae e Myrtaceae apresentaram o maior número de espécies, nas duas comunidades vegetais. Palavras-chave -

-The radial growth of mature cork oaks (Quercus suber L.) was studied during a 9-year production cycle using monthly dendrometer measurements and cork ring widths. The mean tree radial increase was 5.1 mm yr -1 and the cork increment accounting for 3.8 mm yr -1 . The radial growth curves for cork, wood and stem were very similar, showing a decreasing trend along the production cycle. Cork increment was always the largest fraction of tree growth (on average 74%) and showed less inter-annual variations as compared to wood. Tree radial growth presented a clear within-the-year seasonal pattern, extending from March to October, with a maximum in JuneJuly. The overall pattern of monthly growth distribution was similar among the years of the production cycle, but some inter-annual variations occurred with 1-2 month shifts or monthly growth rate decreases, related to climatic factors. La croissance radiale de chênes-liège (Quercus suber L.) adultes en pleine production a été suivie pendant un cycle de production de 9 ans par des mesures mensuelles de dendromètres et par la mesure des cernes du liège. L'accroissement annuel des arbres a été de 5,1 mm an -1 , dont 3,8 mm an -1 de liège. Les courbes de croissance du liège, du bois et de la tige ont montré une même tendance à la diminution de la croissance au cours du cycle. Le liège, qui correspond à la fraction majeure de l'accroissement de l'arbre (en moyenne 74 %), a montré une variation interannuelle de croissance moindre que le bois. La croissance soumise à une variation saisonnière marquée, s'étend de mars à octobre, avec un maximum en juin-juillet. La distribution de la croissance a été similaire toutes les années, parfois avec des déphasages de 1 à 2 mois ou avec une diminution de l'accroissement résultant de variations interannuelles de précipita-tion ou de température. Abstract• Cork oak mortality is a recurrent problem in southwestern Portugal. Despite the perception of increasingly visible damage in oak woodlands on drought-prone sites, the role of the various environmental factors in their decline is not clear.• To describe the spatial patterns of cork oak (Quercus suber L.) mortality, a cork oak mortality index (MI) was determined for each landscape feature (agroforestry system, soil type, slope and aspect) using a GIS approach. To achieve this goal, a logistic regression model was formulated analyzing interactions between landscape attributes and allowing a prediction of cork oak mortality.• Maximum values of MI were found in (i) shrublands and open woodlands with shrub encroachment (MI 6 and 3, respectively), where competition for soil water between tree and understory increases; and (ii) on lower slopes in the rounded hilltops and smooth hillsides or shallow soils where access to groundwater resources during summer drought is difficult.• The model highlighted the importance of the agroforestry systems on cork oak mortality and may be used to identify sensitive areas where mitigation actions should be employed in a scenario of increasing drought severity in these Mediterranean ecosystems. Malgré la perception de dommages de plus en plus visibles dans les forêts de chênes sur les sites propices à la sécheresse, le rôle des différents facteurs environnementaux dans leur déclin n'est pas clair.• Pour décrire les schémas spatiaux de la mortalité du chêne liège (Quercus suber L.), un indice de mortalité des chênes lièges (MI) a été déterminé pour chaque élément du paysage (système agroforestier, type de sol, pente et exposition) en utilisant une approche SIG. Pour atteindre cet objectif, un modèle de régression logistique a été formulé pour analyser les interactions entre les attributs du paysage et permettre une prédiction de la mortalité du chêne liège.• Les valeurs maximum des MI ont été trouvées dans (i) les zones arbustives et les forêts claires avec empiètement d'arbustes (MI 6 et 3, respectivement), où la concurrence pour l'eau du sol entre les arbres et le sous-bois s'accroît ; et (ii) dans le bas des pentes du sommet des collines arrondies et les pentes douces de coteaux ou sur les sols peu profonds où l'accès aux ressources souterraines en eau est difficile en période de sécheresse estivale.• Le modèle a mis en évidence l'importance des systèmes agroforestiers dans la mortalité des chênes-lièges et peut être utilisé pour identifier les zones sensibles où des actions de mitigation devraient être employées dans un scénario d'augmentation de la sévérité des sécheresses dans ces écosystèmes méditerranéens.

Cork cambium (or phellogen) is a secondary meristem responsible for the formation of phelloderm and phellem/cork, which together compose the periderm. In Quercus suber L., the phellogen is active throughout the entire life of the tree, producing a continuous and renewable outer bark of cork. To identify specific candidate genes associated with cork cambium activity and phellem differentiation, we performed a comparative transcriptomic study of Q. suber secondary growth tissues (xylem and phellogen/phellem) using RNA-seq. The present work provides a high-resolution map of all the transcripts identified in the phellogen/phellem tissues. A total of 6013 differentially expressed genes were identified, with 2875 of the transcripts being specifically enriched during the cork formation process versus secondary xylem formation. Furthermore, cork samples originating from the original phellogen (`virgin’ cork) and from a traumatic phellogen (`amadia’ cork) were also compared. Our results point to a shortlist of potentially relevant candidate genes regulating phellogen activity and phellem differentiation, including novel genes involved in the suberization process, as well as genes associated to ethylene and jasmonate signaling and to meristem function. The future functional characterization of some of the identified candidate genes will help to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying cork cambium activity and phellem differentiation.

The diameter growth of mature cork oaks under cork production in southwestern Portugal was studied during a 9-year cork-production cycle in relation to fluctuations in precipitation and temperature, and to drought indices combining the two variables. A dendroclimatological approach was applied to the series of 8 complete years contained in the cork-production cycle and growth effects were removed by standardization and calculation of annual growth indices. The most important factor positively influencing diameter growth was cumulative precipitation in the growing season (January-June) and in the previous autumn and winter (October/November of the previous year-June). The monthly temperature is a less influential factor, negatively correlated with diameter growth in high summer drought (August) and positively correlated at the beginning of physiological activity (March).
