Vaccination against infectious diseases: What is promising?

Abstract: Vaccination has proven to be one of the best weapons protecting the mankind against infectious diseases. Along with the huge progress in microbiology, numerous highly efficacious and safe vaccines have been produced by conventional technology (cultivation), by the use of molecular biology (genetic modification), or by synthetic chemistry. Sterilising prevention is achieved by the stimulation of antibody production, while the stimulation of cell-mediated immune responses may prevent the outbreak of disease in c… Show more

“…Besides vaccination [57] further iatrogenic actions helping to survive diseased people with impaired immunity would be the successful treatment of sleeping sickness followed by reduction of spread of Trypanosoma brucei , or similarly treatment of plague, cholera, malaria, etc. Absence of those infectious agents that kill patients with severe immunodeficiency would have contributed to preserve the life of HIV-1 infected subjects with minor immunodeficiency and thus allowing the spread of HIV by the sexual route.…”

“…There are a large number of approaches to vaccine development and generation of diagnostic tools [21][22][23]. In the case of HEV, most of the commercial and in-house serological assays are based on selected regions of immobilised ORF2 capsid protein, and some include ORF3 protein [24,25].…”

“…Hence, Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) and Interferon Release Assay (IGRA) is needed to aid in diagnosis of TB. Vaccination is often considered as an effective strategy for TB control (Doerr and Berger, 2014). The vaccination of TB that increase the immune system from infancy into adulthood would have a significant impact on global TB rates (Styblo and Meijer, 1976).…”
