“…These exercises decrease the use of interventions and medicines for pain relief (Barbieri et al, 2013;Gau et al, 2011). Perineal exercises with a ball are related to foetal presentation progress, relaxation, labour progression, perineal exercise, pain relief, freedom of movement, and psychological support (Silva et al, 2011). This technique can be an effective tool for the promotion of women's comfort and self-efficacy, as well as decreased use of epidural analgesia, lower caesarean birth rates, and a reduced first stage of birth (Gau et al, 2011;Taavoni, Abdolahian, Haghani, & Neysani, 2011).…”

“…Adopting the vertical position promotes movement, acts on the perineum muscles and pelvic fascia, and facilitates rotation and descent of foetal presentation and active participation in the birth process. Studies suggest an increase in intensity of uterine contractions and cervical dilatation (Gau et al, 2011;Lawrence, Lewis, Hofmeyr, Dowswell, & Styles, 2009; Silva, Oliveira, Silva, & Alvarenga, 2011). The combination of warm showers with perineal exercises using a ball during the second stage is related to significant reduction in pain and the promotion of comfort (Barbieri et al, 2013).…”
