Use of a collagen biomatrix (TissuDura®) for dura repair: a long-term neuroradiological and neuropathological evaluation

Abstract: Following dural reconstructions with TissuDura without surgical sutures, no local toxicity or complications were observed for up to 1 year. TissuDura demonstrated elasticity, non-reactivity, and good adaptability. The overlay technique using fibrin glue was simple and fast. Future studies and longer follow-up are needed to confirm the efficacy of TissuDura.

“…However, postoperative complications including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, infections, foreign body reaction, hematomas, fibrotic-hemorrhagic reaction and a chronic inflammatory reaction were still be observed [1,17]. Collagen matrix which either obtained from bovine or equine origin may also carry a risk of zoonotic transmission [5,18,19].…”

“…Dural substitutes could be placed as an onlay over dural defects or sutured [3]. Autologous dura grafts such as pericranium, temporalis fascia and fascia lata could be harvested to complete the dural closure, but several drawbacks were encountered for example insufficient quantity, unsuitable quality, morbidity and pain [4,5]. Allograft based on lyophilized homologous dura mater could be employed, but it was associated with the development of atrophy or adhesion with the brain & Warinkarn Hemstapat kamon_ann@hotmail.com; warinkarn.hem@mahidol.ac.th surface and suffered from the risk of latent virus infections and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) [6,7].…”

“…Similarly, in our two patients with recurrent meningiomas who required re-operation, long-term follow-up using histopathological and ultra structural techniques demonstrated re-absorption of the TissuDura and regeneration of dura mater. The first report with documented histopathological and ultra structural imaging showing dura regeneration after TissuDura graft insertion was presented (Parlato et al, 2011). Our ultrastructural observations showed an absence of inflammatory infiltration and migration of fibroblasts, resulting in the neodura regeneration.…”
