Two Types of Diurnal Variations in Heavy Rainfall during July over Korea

Abstract: This study examined the characteristics of the diurnal variations of heavy rainfall (⩾110 mm in 12 hours) in Korea and the related atmospheric circulation for July from 1980–2020. During the analysis period, two dominant pattens of diurnal variation of the heavy rainfall emerged: all-day heavy rainfall (AD) and morning only heavy rainfall (MO) types. For the AD-type, the heavy rainfall is caused by abundant moisture content in conjunction with active convection in the morning (0000–1200, LST; LST = UTC + 9) an… Show more

“…South Korea also experienced one of its most unusual East Asian Summer Monsoon seasons since 1973 due to the very active Changma front. Torrential rains wreaked havoc across the country causing landslides, flooding and taking lives (Park et al 2021 ). In July, ongoing heavy rains affected eastern and western areas of Japan in association with the stagnation of an active Baiu front over mainland Japan.…”

“…Most of the total annual precipitation is distributed over the summer months via heavy rainfalls developed by various generating mechanisms of moisture transports from surrounding seas and remote oceans, including atmospheric rivers (e.g. Changma/Maiyu) and tropical cyclones (Ha et al 2012, Kim and Jin 2016, Park et al 2021. This rapid recovery of the meteorological droughts has been found in the eastern US region (Kam et al 2014).…”
