Transient Lymphocytic Colitis After SARS-CoV2 mRNA Vaccine

Abstract: This is the first scientific report describing lymphocytic colitis after administration of the Pfizer severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine. The patient developed liquid stools, abdominal pain, and nausea within 24 hours of receiving the second dose. Symptoms were persistent for 3 months but improved 113 days after onset. Laboratory profiles and gastrointestinal polymerase chain reaction were normal. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy performed 98 days… Show more

“…The side effects of mRNA vaccination, such as myocarditis, lymphocytic colitis and fasciitis, are becoming apparent. 41 , 42 , 43 On the one hand, mRNA vaccines need the innate immune system to enhance their ability to induce and tailor antigen‐specific responses. On the other hand, a systemic and persistent inflammatory response can have adverse consequences for the body.…”

“…There was a case report of a 25-year-old female with an inherited antithrombin deficiency in her sixth week of pregnancy, who died from a severe cerebral venous thrombosis with an onset approximately four weeks after receiving the second mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Takikawa et al 2022). Other possible long-term adverse effects that could last weeks to months include prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain (Akaishi et al 2022d;Chey et al 2022). To be noted, as the exact causal relationships between COVID-19 vaccines and these serious medical events have yet to be determined, some of the reported symptoms might have been falsely attributed to COVID-19 vaccines.…”

“…However, onset of lymphocytic colitis has been observed rarely following SARS-CoV-2 infection with consistently elevated levels of fecal calprotectin and persistent diarrhea, even in the absence of fecal SARS-CoV-2 RNA ( Nassar et al, 2019 ). Moreover, lymphocytic colitis has been reported immediately after the second SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine dose ( Chey et al, 2022 ). The authors additionally performed a review of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System and revealed further five mRNA vaccine-related cases of microscopic colitis following both Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna inoculations (three individuals developed severe diarrhea shortly after the second mRNA vaccine dose, whereas two individuals developed diarrhea approximately 1 month after receiving their second dose) ( Chey et al, 2022 ).…”
