Negative stereotyping of older workers has been identified as a major factor in employment discrimination against them. A study of Australian employers’ attitudes toward older workers found systematic negative stereotyping and low likelihood of hiring older workers. The current study employed a national random sample of 267 employers, and tested 3 interventions aimed at promoting positive attitudes toward older workers and increasing the likelihood of their hiring. The first intervention was in the form of a fact sheet; the second aimed at inducing cognitive dissonance; and the third was a combination of the two. The combination intervention produced promising results. Employers in this condition showed more favorable attitudes toward older workers overall, and greater preference toward hiring older workers

Palavras-chaveCase management, desinstitucionalização, serviços comunitários em saúde mental. resumo objetivo: Realizar uma revisão de estudos sobre programa de tratamento assertivo na comunidade (PACT) e case management para verificar se os resultados demonstram desfechos mais favoráveis quando tais modelos são implementados na rede comunitária de assistência para portadores de doença mental grave e persistente. métodos: A coleta de artigos -publicados entre 1985 e 2005 -foi realizada em duas etapas: a primeira, na base de dados PubMed, com expressões-chave mental health, community care, services evaluation e seleção de artigos cuja temática era PACT e case management, e a segunda, no banco de dados da revista Psychiatric Services, com palavras-chave assertive community treatment, PACT e case management. Foram desconsiderados estudos que analisavam serviços exclusivos para crianças, idosos e pacientes com diagnóstico único de abuso de álcool/drogas; abordavam unicamente os custos da intervenção e se referiam exclusivamente a serviços hospitalares. resultados: A partir da leitura dos 73 estudos selecionados, os autores descreveram oito categorias nas quais os artigos foram agrupados, visto que um artigo poderia pertencer a mais de uma categoria. Conclusões: O PACT e o case management são estratégias importantes e reconhecidamente mais eficazes, quando comparados a outros modelos de cuidado, em trazer evoluções favoráveis para indivíduos com doença mental grave e persistente.

There is a pressing need to develop community interventions that will address stigma against mental illness in rural India. This cross-sectional study will compare social representations of depression in villages where educational programs have targeted mental illness and stigma versus control villages. Participants from the villages exposed to the educational interventions (n = 146) will be compared with a sample from six control villages (n = 187) in the same geographic region, using a structured questionnaire. The impact of the intervention as a predictor for questionnaire score will be assessed along with socio-demographic variables. The intervention villages showed higher levels of literacy regarding depression and lower levels of stigma, after adjusting for all other socio-demographic variables. While some demographic factors associated with the knowledge and attitudes towards depression are not modifiable, our research provides evidence in favor of the positive influence a community grassroots intervention can have on mental health literacy in rural settings.
