SUMMARY:The aim of the study was quantifying and morphologically analyzing the myenteric neurons of the small and large gastric curvatures of the glandular stomach of rats infected the tachyzoites of the Toxoplasma gondii for 30 days. Ten male rats were assigned into two groups: Control Group (CG) and Experimental Group (EG). The animals from the CG received saline solution orally whereas the EG animals received 104 tachyzoites of the T. gondii genotype III strain (BTU II). After 30 days, euthanasia was conducted for the removal of the stomach, which was dissected under the stereomicroscope for removal of the tunica mucosa and the tela submucosa. Whole mounts were stained with Giemsa. Quantification of the myenteric neurons was conducted by using a 40X-objective microscope in 40 microscopic fields for the region of the small gastric curvature and 40 fields for the large gastric curvature of the glandular stomach of the animals from both groups. The cell body of 50 myenteric neurons from each region was measured for each animal. Chronic experimental infection caused by the genotype III strain of Toxoplasma gondii was verified to reduce myenteric neuron density only in the small gastric curvature region of the glandular stomach, not resulting in significant changes in the size of the neurons.

ResumoNeste estudo, foram avaliados os efeitos da infecção crônica por taquizoítos de Toxoplasma gondii sobre os neurônios mientéricos do cólon descendente de ratos adultos. Utilizaram-se 10 ratos Wistar machos, com 60 dias de idade, divididos em grupo controle e experimental, que foram inoculados por via oral com 10 5 taquizoítos do genótipo I de T. gondii. Após 30 dias, os animais foram anestesiados e submetidos à laparatomia. O cólon descendente foi retirado, mensurado, dissecado e seus preparados de membrana submetidos à técnica de Giemsa, para coloração dos neurônios do plexo mientérico, seguido por análise morfométrica e quantitativa. Verificou-se que a infecção não causou alterações nas dimensões do órgão ou na população neuronal, porém houve um aumento significativo da área do pericário e citoplasma.Palavras-chave: Toxoplasmose, taquizoítos, neurônios entéricos. AbstractThe effects of the chronic infection due to Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites on the myenteric neurons of the adult rat descending colon were assessed in this study. Ten male, 60-day-old, Wistar rats, divided into control and experimental group were orally inoculated with 10 5 tachyzoites from Toxoplasma gondii genotype I strain. After 30 days, the animals were anesthetized and submitted to laparotomy. The descending colon was removed, dissected, and the whole-mounts were staining by Giemsa, in order to observe neurons of the myenteric plexus, followed by quantitative and morphometric analysis. The radiographic findings in the stomach in the upper gastrointestinal examination in 11 patients with the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) were reviewed. Four cases of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) showed multiple submucosal nodular filling defects; in one of these cases, ulceration of some of the nodules was present. Gastric lymphoma occurred in two cases and appeared as one or several large nodular masses; one of these involved the esophagogastric junction. Five cases of infectious gastritis, caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV), Cryptosporidium, and Toxoplasma, were manifested as thickened gastric folds and/or antral narrowing. Thus, in patients with AIDS, gastric neoplastic lesions can be suggested when nodular filling defects or masses are identified, whereas inflammatory processes tend to show thickened gastric folds or antral narrowing. However, endoscopic biopsy is required to enable proper treatment.
