Tissue Damage and Oxidant/Antioxidant Balance

Abstract: The oxidant/antioxidant balance in healthy tissues is maintained with a predominance of antioxidants. Various factors that can lead to tissue damage disrupt the oxidant/antioxidant balance in favor of oxidants. In this study, disruptions of the oxidant/antioxidant balance in favor of oxidants were found to be a consequence of the over-consumption of antioxidants. For this reason, antioxidants are considered to be of importance in the prevention and treatment of various types of tissue damage that are aggravate… Show more

“…The oxidant/antioxidant balance is maintained by the superiority of antioxidants in physiological conditions. The change of this balance in favor of oxidants causes oxidative stress [26]. In the current study, the level of tGSH was found to be lower in jejunal tissues with a high level of MDA.…”

“…Furthermore, IL-1β and TNF-α gene expressions were also significantly increased in the tissues in which MDA was significantly increased. MDA is known to be an oxidant and GSH an antioxidant parameter 17 . Therefore, increased MDA and decreased tGSH amounts indicate the development of oxidative stress.…”

“…Antioxidant superiority in the oxidant-antioxidant balance is maintained in healthy tissues; various aggressive factors that may lead to tissue damage compromise the oxidant-antioxidant balance in favor of oxidants. This is known as oxidative stress [31]. El-Shitany et al [32] also reported increased MDA expression and decreased GSH expression in tissues injected with carrageenan.…”
