Thymidine kinase activity in oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: Thymidine kinase activity was assayed in scrum from 30 patients with oral squamous cell careinoma and 30 controls. Thymidine kinase aetivity was significantly greater in patients with oral eaneer than in eontrols and might be useful as a marker enzyme.

“…A number of cell products, espeeially components of the cell surfaee of malignant cells and enzymes involved in the metabolism of nucleic aeids, may be shed or otherwise freed and, thus, circulate in Ihe blood. In particular, concentrations of /i-2-microglobutin (Scully 1981b) and activities of alkaline deo.xyritionuclease (Scully 198hi) and thymidine kinase (Scully 1982b) arc often raised in the serum of patients with dysplastie lesions and oral cancer. In individuals with premalignant Icsions high scrum deoxyrihonuclease activity can be a sign of poor progno.sis (Scully 1981a).…”

“…Johnson believes that a combination of quantitiative histochemistty and ultra-microbiochetnistry is likely to be of the tnost value but also slates that imtnuno-histoehetnieal techniques are bound to beeotne inereasingly important. Scully (1982) has shown that patients with oral squamous cell catcinotna have a significantly elevated serutn tliytnidine kinase level, but points out that, like other serum tnarkers of malignancy, it is not specific and is raised in some tegenerating tissues.…”
