This study explores thematic progression patterns within the systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and the selection of words identified in writing within the diplomatic workplace. Politeness strategy employed between government to government communication through written diplomatic texts and its relationship with theme and rheme progression is the focus of this study. It is also aimed at raising host country EFL diplomat as well as university students’ awareness of progression patterns and the importance of persuasive writing to mitigate confrontational notions. Many researches have been conducted on public diplomacy and international relations on speeches or verbal texts but no studies on written text communication between a diplomatic office in a foreign country with the host country office announcing the arrival or departure of a diplomat from a foreign nation. To fill that gap is the reason of this study is aiming. A descriptive qualitative study was employed to analyze the theme-rheme progression patterns on a third-party-type diplomatic text of the Embassy of the United States of America addressed to the host country diplomatic consular section of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta. SFL theory was applied particularly in analyzing the textual meta-function of the text to find the theme-rheme progression patterns. The result showed that the distribution of themes and rhemes in the text being analyzed follows the simple progression category.

The use of thematic progression seems important to be applied for among the students' writing projects to maximize the script's organization. This research reported how the realization of thematic progression model to achieve both cohesion and coherence. This study was qualitatively designed to inform these three models of thematic progression as the units of the analysis: 1) constant theme; 2) linier theme, and 3) multiple theme which they were realized in single text of students' projects. The data analysis was taken from 20 manuscripts of the English students in UIN Walisongo in Academic Year 2019/2020. The findings then showed that the most realization of thematic progression in the students' final project proposal was constant theme, it occurred 248 times, linier theme was 183 times, and multiple theme was only 57 occurrences. Those occurrences represented that the text was wellorganized to realize the concept of coherence and cohesion.

This study aims to find out which theme is mostly used in the news text entitled “Health Ministry Ensures No Data Leak in PeduliLindungi App” and identify the kinds of patterns of thematic progression used in the news text. The method used for this study is descriptive qualitative. This study uses Paltridge (2012) thematic progression and Halliday (1985) theme and rheme as grounded theory. The result of the study showed that the most used theme from the news text is textual theme and the pattern of thematic progression used for this news text is multiple themes or split rheme. The result for the kind of theme used by the news text is considered from the number of times textual theme used in the news text which is about 23 times or 57.5%. The pattern of thematic progression used by the news text is multiple theme or split rheme because there are a mix of constant theme and linear theme on the overall pattern of the news text. Based on the pattern of thematic progression the number of constant themes used in the news text is 10 times and linear theme is three times, which makes it considered as a multiple theme or split rheme.
