This article explores the mobilization of local resources to reconstruct devastated villages in Lombok after the earthquake of 2018. Local leadership and NGOs managed to mobilize survivors and their communities to rebuild their devastated built environment by evincing the principle of gotong royong. They made an effort to include the survivors in the reconstruction effort, enabling them to begin their recovery trajectory and creating bonds of friendship and trust between various religious groups and villages. In other disaster aftermath situations, such as Aceh after the tsunami of 2004, NGOs and the Indonesian government did not succeed in mobilizing survivors by evoking the principle of gotong royong and, in some cases, even paralyzed the communities they tried to help. On the basis of qualitative data collected immediately after the earthquakes in 2018 and in the following year, I argue that local leaders and NGOs managed to mobilize these groups through effective leadership, transparency about funds and goals, stakeholder participation, an understanding of local legislature and explicit roles of accountability.

Gotong royong is a significant character for Indonesian generation Z (Gen-Z), based on traditional values, to unite this multicultural nation. However, the rapid development of digital media has the potential to alter traditional values. Gen-Z has the ability to quickly adapt to this technology. However, there is a concern that the gotong royong character may decline with the rise of digital media. This research investigates the perception of Gen-Z towards the gotong royong character and explores the way to preserve this value. This is qualitative descriptive research, whose population is made up of 108 students from six excellent schools in three Indonesian cities with different religious backgrounds and educational systems. The results show that Gen-Z still considers the gotong royong value is important. However, they also acknowledge that it can be threatened by the advancement of digital technology. With this awareness, Gen-Z can explore ways to adopt digital technology to preserve this character value, such as utilizing digital learning in club study and digital fundraising. This research recommends optimizing the school institution to take a more active role in fostering character through online character-building learning.

“My Neighbor, My Friend": The Relevance of Support, Closeness, and History of Relations in Neighborhood Friendship

Friendship is a common and essential social relationship in daily life. Various works of literature have described friendship including how it is experienced in various contexts, yet limited studies have focused on the neighborhood context. This study aimed to investigate the relevance of neighborhood friendship and the characteristics of friendship that make it still relevant, especially in Indonesia. This study was conducted in two phases: 1) an online survey with an open-ended questionnaire and 2) in-depth interviews. A total of 222 participants completed the questionnaire and among those, 15 participants were interviewed to further understand the relevance of neighborhood friendship based on the emerging themes from the open-ended responses. This study found that neighborhood friendship is still relevant despite physical distance. Those relevancies are perceived in the three main characteristics of friendship: support, closeness, and history of relations. This study also found that the essence of friendship is not only discussed in a romantic view which highlights intimacy and closeness, but also in an instrumental view. However, support as an instrumental process may indicate the expressions of closeness, especially in close friendships. Furthermore, this study also suggests that although proximity characterized by physical interaction is crucial in the formation and maintenance of neighborhood friendship, physical distance and social mobility did not dissolve the relationship, due to the history of relations. In the neighborhood context, the history of relations bond people to a certain place and the social relationship formed in that particular place, stimulating certain feelings of belonging which encourage the maintenance of neighborhood friendship.
