“…At larger scales, sea-zoning for artisanal and industrial fleets, including allocation of exclusive spatial rights to SSF communities, mitigated governance problems in some countries, including Chile (Castilla 2010) and Uruguay (Horta and Defeo 2012). However, local institutions generally lack cross-scale linkages with higher governance levels (Cinner et al 2012b), suggesting that formal cross-scale governance recognition and support through the institutionalization of fishery rights is still needed in Latin American SSFs (Defeo andCastilla 2005, Chakalall et al 2007).…”

“…Conflicts between industrial and artisanal fisheries in the same geographical space are a common issue in small-scale fisheries because of competition for resources (Bennett et al, 2001;Salas et al, 2007), and along with the use of gillnets, is one of the top problems faced by fishers in Colombia (Saavedra- Díaz et al, 2015. Declining trends of CPUE seen in the whitemouth croaker fishery in Uruguay were attributed to industrial fisheries activities overlapping spatially with smallscale fisheries (Horta and Defeo, 2012). Given the indication that shrimp trawling may have intensified in Tribugá following exclusion from the ZEPA (Díaz and Caro, 2016), research is needed to establish how this displaced fishing effort contributed to the decline in fish stocks in Tribugá.…”

“…Interdependencias tecnológicas entre métodos de buceo no han sido documentadas en la literatura, pero si entre flotas. Por ejemplo, Horta & Defeo (2012) encontraron efectos negativos de las actividades de la flota industrial sobre la capturas de la flota artesanal mediante el uso de un índice de interdependencia tecnológica que estima el nivel de traslape entre áreas de pesca.…”
