Impacts of Climate Variability on Latin American Small-scale Fisheries

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Small-scale fisheries (SSFs) are social-ecological systems that play a critical role in terms of food security and poverty alleviation in Latin America. These fisheries are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic and climatic drivers acting at multiple scales. We review the effects of climate variability on Latin American SSFs, and discuss the combined effects of two additional human drivers: globalization of markets and governance. We show drastic long-term and large-scale effects of climate variab… Show more

“…Defeo et al (2013) address some of the key impacts of climate change on marine social-ecological systems in LAC by using a case study approach. The authors point out that the data series used for the case studies analyzed confirms a dramatic impact of climate variability on the stocks and fisheries investigated.…”

“…Sumaila et al [12] addressed beneficial subsidies associated with investment in the natural capital of fisheries by reporting community development programs in rural fisheries, involving local communities/ livelihoods integrated into policy demands. Defeo et al [13] addressed the importance of the social-ecological systems of small-scale fisheries considering the effects of climate change, markets and governance: for example, they concluded that weak governance, market globalization, fishing pressure and climate change contributed to resource depletion in shellfisheries of Latin America. Lopes et al [14] have shown that marine protected areas did not visibly protect either fisheries or fishermen in fisheries from Paraty, SE Brazil.…”
