The prevalence of retinal angiomatous proliferation in age-related macular degeneration with occult choroidal neovascularization

Abstract: d-ICGA is invaluable for early diagnosis of RAP in exudative age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). In our series, up to one fourth of type 2 occult CNV were in fact RAP.

“…In our patient, intravitreal ranibizumab stopped the progression of the CNV-related disease, and visual acuity improved significantly, at least in the short term. Type 3 CNV is becoming an important cause of CNV, and unfortunately to date treatment of these lesions remains a difficult problem [5,[8][9] . Nevertheless, early diagnosis of type 3 CNV is easier with dynamic indocyanine green angiography and it has been reported to be associated with a better anatomical and functional prognosis after treatment [9] .…”

“…Type 3 CNV is becoming an important cause of CNV, and unfortunately to date treatment of these lesions remains a difficult problem [5,[8][9] . Nevertheless, early diagnosis of type 3 CNV is easier with dynamic indocyanine green angiography and it has been reported to be associated with a better anatomical and functional prognosis after treatment [9] . It is important for clinicians to recognize the anatomic features and the early manifestations of this peculiar form of CNV so that a proper diagnosis can be made and, when possible, an appropriate management administered.…”

“…1,7,9 Noticeably, RAP is considered to represent up to 25% of occult or minimally classic CNV. 10,11 The indocyanine green angiography (ICG) can be helpful in detecting these lesions because neovascularization may appear like a focal area of hyperfluorescence, which is commonly referred as a "hot spot." [6][7][8] There is a controversy about which is the most appropriate treatment of RAP, although it is generally considered that RAP has a poor prognosis because it typically progresses to severe stages ending in a disciform scar.…”
