Treatment Effects in Retinal Angiomatous Proliferation Imaged with OCT Angiography

Abstract: Purpose: This prospective case series is aimed at exploring optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCT-A) as a treatment monitoring tool in patients treated for retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP). Methods: Twelve treatment-naïve RAP patients were included, with a median age of 79 years (range 65–90). Patients were imaged with an experimental 1,040-nm swept-source phase-resolved OCT-A instrument before and after treatment. Treatment consisted of either intravitreal bevacizumab or triamcinolone injectio… Show more

“…After treatment of RAP, a reduction or complete regression of the previously registered blood flow in the neovascularisation region can be observed by means of OCT-A. This appears to occur largely in parallel with the reduction in intra-or subretinal fluid and might be valuable in the early detection of further recurrence [20].…”

“…Clear identification of RAP is difficult, however. A sharp distinction between stages 2 and 3 is also not always possible because of the high reflectivity of the RPE and associated loss of information [2,3]. Querques et al investigated the morphological changes during treatment with ranibizumab in 21 patients using SD-OCT.…”

“…Type 1 or occult CNV lies beneath RPE while Type 2 or classic CNV lies above or at the level of RPE. Type 3 is retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP) which results from neovessels originating from the deep retinal capillary plexus and growing downwards to anastomose with choriocapillaris [4].…”
