Abstract:Averrhoa bilimbi grows in tropical and subtropical countries and has the potential to be used as phytopharmaceuticals. Averrhoa bilimbi leaves and fruits contain phytochemicals, such as alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, phenols, and triterpenoids. These compounds are mostly obtained by extraction and can be used for their pharmacological properties in the form of antibacterial, antivirus, total cholesterol level reducer, and antioxidant. Further research and development need to be carried out on the ef… Show more

Averrhoa bilimbi L. is used widely as spices and traditional medicine, which contained several chemical compounds such as alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, and tannin. The aim of this study is to discover the best dose of ethyl acetate fraction from A.bilimbi leaves, which have pharmacology activity on total cholesterol and triglycerides in the hypercholesterolemic model. Thirty adult male white mice were divided into six groups; each group was containing five animals. Five groups were given high-fat diet foods and PTU induced the animals to obtain hypercholesterolemia with a frequency of 1 time a day orally for 14 days, while the normal group was given vehicle (Na CMC 5%) and standard feed. On the 15 th day, the normal group was given vehicle (Na CMC 5%), negative control group was given highfat feed, a positive control group was given atorvastatin dose 0.26 mg/kg BW, and another group was given ethyl acetate fraction of A.bilimbi leaves dose 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg BW orally. All animals were treated until the 28 th day. On day 29, the blood were taken to determine the total cholesterol andtriglyceride levels using clinical photometer 5010 v5+. The data were statistically analyzed using a one-way ANOVA followed by the Duncan Multiple Range Test.. This study indicates that administration of ethyl acetate fraction from A.bilimbi leaves can affect the total cholesterol levels and triglycerides in hypercholesterolemic mice (P<0.05). Ethyl acetate fraction dose 200 mg/kg BW shows the best activity in decreasing total cholesterol levels and triglycerides on mice hypercholesterolemic model (P<0.05).

“…In general, belimbing wuluh commonly called with starfruit can be used to treat asthma, diabetes, cough, sore throat, canker sores, and fever [5][6][7]. Parts of the belimbing wuluh used for treatment include flowers, leaves, fruit, and stems.…”
Averrhoa bilimbi L., (Belimbing wuluh), is traditionally used for various antidiabetic, anti-larvicidal, antioxidant, hypoallergenic, antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory treatments. This study evaluated 3 extracts (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol) isolated from starfruit flowers for antidiabetic effects using in vitro and in silico methods. Ethyl acetate extract showed the highest activity, followed by n-hexane and n-butanol extracts in inhibiting α-glucosidase. Each extract has an IC50 value of 89.84, 52.88, and 114.86 µg/mL. The active compounds contained in the ethyl acetate extract were determined using LC-MS, and the compounds with the highest retention time were identified as tautomycetin (8.585) and lithocholic acid (8.993). Tautomycetin and lithocholic acid showed promising results in the in silico test. The computational predictions showed that tautomycetin (−6.2 kcal/mol) and lithocholic acid (−10.0 kcal/mol) have better binding affinity values than miglitol (−5.4 kcal/mol). This is the first time the antidiabetic test of starfruit flower extract has been carried out.
HIGHLIGHTS
Averrhoa bilimbi L well-known as belimbing wuluh. is a highly nutritious plant and an endemic and tropical species mainly used as a traditional medicine to treat several diseases. Its fruit is food with economic value in Indonesia
Extracts of ethyl acetate from the flower showed the highest antidiabetic activity with IC50 52.88 μg/mL
In the phytochemical determination from Averrhoa bilimbi L flower using Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS), several compounds were suspected of having antidiabetic activity, namely the compound lithocholic acid, and tautomycetin
Lithocholic acid and tautomycetin have been tested for their bioactivity as antidiabetic with in vitro and in vivo methods
