The influence of moisture on the in vitro embryo germination and morphogenesis of babassu (Orbignya phalerata Mart.)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of babassu (Orbignya phalerata Mart.) embryos as a function of desiccation. The fruits were placed in a convection oven at 37±2°C for 0, 3, 6, 9, or 12 days. After these periods, the moisture contents of the fruits and seeds were determined. A reduction in the water content occurred more rapidly in the fruits than in the seeds. The decrease in seed moisture content from 12.59% (on the basis of fresh weight) to 4.56% did not affect … Show more

“…However, this value is slightly above the level considered ideal for conservation of orthodox seeds. Seeds belonging to this category tolerate desiccation of 90% to 95%, retaining moisture of 5% to 10%, thus remaining viable for long periods (Ferreira & Borghetti, 2004;Silva et al, 2012;Barrozo et al, 2014).…”

“…According to Rubio Neto et al (2012), drying macaw palm fruit at 37°C for up to eight days makes the extraction of intact seeds easier and does not result in a loss of embryo vigour or seed viability. In this study, the germination of embryos decreased with increasing of temperature, although drying at 37°C did not affect the germination.…”

“…As palmeiras de babaçus apresentam um tronco simples e robusto que pode crescer até 20 m de altura. O fruto cresce em cachos, e cada árvore pode produzir até 2.000 frutos por ano (MACHADO et al, 2006;SILVA et al, 2012). Esta espécie é distribuída solitariamente em florestas ou em áreas abertas e é mais comumente encontrada em áreas degradadas, onde a espécie é dominante.…”
