Abdominal obesity (AO) is associated with endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, metabolic syndrome, and cancer. AO is a multifactorial disorder arising from genetic, environmental, socioeconomic, and behavioral factors. Thus, in this chapter, we devote ourselves to the exercise of trying to explain the epidemiology of AO in adults. We showed the increasing prevalence of AO around the world, and a gender difference in this determination was observed. Among women, the population group who is the most affected by AO, a higher prevalence of AO is observed in individuals living in low-or middle-income countries (LMIC), who are older, multiparous, and in the menopausal transition, and who belong to the poorest strata and have lower educational level. While among men, the risk of AO is positively associated with socioeconomic status, particularly in LMIC. Regarding behavioral factors (eating frequency, sleep duration, physical activity, and smoking), gender differences are difficult to be detected due to the lack of studies investigating their association with AO according to sex. However, the current evidence suggests that men benefit more from consuming a greater number of meals a day and women are more affected by the harmful effects of physical inactivity. We argued AO, despite biological conditions associated with behavior factors, should be examined as an important issue of gender inequality in health, possibly mediated by socioeconomic and behavioral differences between men and women.

Overweight and obesity are a worldwide pandemic with geographic differences. Possible explanations include variable access to food and its quality, dietary habits of the populations, behavioral patterns, and characteristics of the food markets. This study aimed to examine the acquisition of food in the different regions of Brazil and to relate it with the geography of Brazilian obesity. We used data provided by a Brazilian official organ, which gathers periodic data on the household food acquisition. Descriptive statistics and multidimensional scaling techniques were used to ascertain the similarity of food acquisition among populations in the Brazilian states. High levels of overweight and obesity occur in all states (>44%), especially in the southern half of the country (>54%). We found differences in the food acquisition patterns throughout the country. Furthermore, we identify that states with similar dietary patterns have similar population levels of overweight and obesity, demonstrating a possible relationship between the food supply models and these food insecurity manifestations as expressed in the individual health. However, the occurrence of regional singularities suggests that the food supply model constitutes only one of the multiple variables that compete for diversity in the Brazilian regional distribution of obesity and overweight. We found that socioeconomic conditions influence nutritional misalignment in the geography of Brazil. Our results show that overweight and obesity have a higher occurrence in middle age (35-79 years), and it is more present in females. Moreover, women with lower education and lower incomes have higher levels of overweight and obesity, an association of unhealthy food intake with poverty. In men, obesity is more frequent in those with more schooling and higher incomes. Based on the widely variable geographical characteristics of the distant states of Brazil, we conclude that overweight and obesity go beyond an individual lifestyle and access to quality food, and is more related to a complex framing of factors, like schooling, age, sex, income, feeding patterns, food markets, and anthropological circumstances.

Amaç: Kilo sorunu günümüzde hızla artan halk sağlığı sorunlarından birisidir. Çalışmanın amacı bir grup yetişkin kadında ağırlık üzerinde etkili olduğu düşünülen psikososyal faktörlerin araştırılmasıdır. Yöntem: Araştırma Kocaeli ilinde yaşayan 150 kadın katılımcıyla yürütülmüş, kesitsel türde bir çalışmadır. Araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan yaş, eğitim düzeyi, medeni durum, çocuk sahibi olma durumu, meslek, çalışma durumu, ekonomik durum, psikiyatrik hastalık öyküsü, kronik hastalıklar, ailede obezite öyküsü gibi bilgilerin sorulduğu kişisel bilgi formu kullanılmıştır. Kilo düzeyini belirlemek için Dünya Sağlık Örgütü'nün belirlediği Beden Kitle İndeksi değerlerinden faydalanılmıştır. Bulgular: İlkokul ve daha az eğitim düzeyi %54 oranıyla en fazla obez grupta görülürken, üniversite ve üstü eğitim düzeyi en yüksek %72 oranıyla normal kilolu katılımcıların olduğu grupta görülmektedir. BKİ ile toplam kronik hastalık sayısı arasında orta düzeyde pozitif yönlü doğrusal bir ilişki bulunmaktadır (p<0,05). Sigara kullanımı açısından gruplar arasında anlamlı bir farklılaşma bulunamamıştır (p>0,05). Gruplara göre psikiyatrik hastalık geçirenlerin büyük bir çoğunluğu %47,9 ile obez katılımcıların olduğu gruptadır. En az psikiyatrik hastalık geçirenler ise %25 oranıyla fazla kilolu grupta yer almaktadır. Sonuç: Yaş, eğitim düzeyi, meslek, psikiyatrik hastalık öyküsü, sahip olunan çocuk sayısı gibi değişkenler kadınlardaki kilo alımıyla ilişkili faktörler olarak bulunmuştur. Obezite üzerindeki önlenebilir faktörlerin belirlenip bunlara yönelik çalışmaların yapılması koruyucu sağlık çalışmaları açısından önemlidir. The purpose of this research is that researching psychosocial factors that is related weight gain in women. Methods:The study is sectional research that is made up by 150 women who live in Kocaeli. Personel information form that includes age, education level, marital status, having a child, job, working, economical status, psychiatric illness story, chronic illness, obesity in family, was prepared by researcher. Body mass index that is determined by World Health Organization was used in order to determine weight level. Results: Primary school and lower education level is seen in the group with the highest obesity rate at 54%, university and higher education level is seen in the normal group with the highest 72%. There is a medium level positive lineer correlation between body mass index and total chronic illness (p<0.05). There is no relation between groups about smoking (p>0.05). When, the most psychiatric illness story is found in obesity group with 47.9%, the lowest rate is 25% in overweight group. Conclusion: Age, education level, job, psychiatric illness story, number of child and other variables are found related factors in weight gain.
