Crops production subsector depends on various factors including natural factors as well as non-natural factors. Meanwhile, in vast areas of Tanzania including the Mbeya Region, rice farmers struggle to make their living through rice farming regardless of various challenges with which the subsector is crumbled. This study aimed at assessing the factors influencing the performance of rice farming in the Mbeya Region of Tanzania. Multi-stage sampling technique was applied to obtain representative samples. Data was collected from a field survey of 240 small-scale farmers by the use of questionnaires from January to March 2018. Descriptive statistics method was used to analyze the data and the Ordinary Least Square regression model was used to estimate parameters. The results indicate excess rainfall and droughts events significantly influenced rice production negatively by reducing 3 and 5% for each occurrence, respectively. Marital status and gender significantly influenced positively rice production in the study area. Other influential production factors including market price lag, pest and diseases, and farm size were statistically significant in rice production. The study recommends possible interventions such as increased accessibility to extension services, agricultural financial services, improved seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides to mention a few by government and other responsible institutions which hamper the growth of the rice industry to increase food security to the farming populace.

Shallot is one of the tuber crops used in human life worldwide. Lembah Palu variety of shallot (LPVS) is the best raw material for the fried shallot industry. The main problem is that tubers have no standard harvest age and storage duration to support these plants' germination and early growth. Therefore, shallots' growth and productivity are influenced by tubers' viability and vigor. This study aimed to investigate the harvest age and storage duration to give the best viability and vigor of shallot tubers. This research was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) factorial and three replications. The first factor was the harvest age of shallots, which consisted of four levels: 60, 65, 70, and 75 days after planting (DAP). The second factor was the storage duration of tubers, which consisted of four levels: 30, 40, 50, and 60 days after harvest (DAH). The harvesting age of 60-65 DAP significantly affected the parameter of germination power, tuber weight loss, and seedling dry weight. Likewise, the storage duration significantly affected the parameter of germination time, germination rate, tuber weight loss, and seedling dry weight. These research findings show that the harvest age of 60-65 DAP and the storage duration of 30 DAH give the best viability and vigor of shallot tuber. Therefore, we suggest that it is necessary to pay attention to tubers' harvest age and storage duration to find their maximal growth and yield of shallots.

Soybean is an important food commodity that has very large market potential and its needs continue to increase. For the sake of achieving self-sufficiency in soybeans, one important factor is the availability of scatter seeds. Provision of appropriate soybean seeds has a strategic role as a means of supporting increased soybean production. In the field, the seed flow system in Mojokerto Regency, East Java Province, is still facing problems, namely the absence of seed channels for rainy season cultivation in dry land so that it cannot grow a sustainable "Jabalsim" system. For this reason, this activity aims to 1) produce superior soybean seeds according to farmers' preferences to meet market demand, 2) grow seed producers in soybean development areas to ensure adequate supply and distribution of quality seeds of superior varieties, and 3) as well as assist in the application of technological innovations to reduce the yield gap. The results showed that the activity of seed production in Wuwut Village, Mojoanyar Sub-District, Mojokerto District could be categorized as independent. Indicators of independence are: 1) Establishment of a seed producer on behalf of Arifin with a certificate of breeder as Extention Seed producer number 030 / UPT.PSBTPH / MJK / VII / 2019, 2) Superior Varieties of Soybean has been adopted and developed (Dega I, Devon I, Deja II) at the research location even outside the research area, 3) Availability of seeds at all times for the needs of members, and 4) the emergence of a soybean seedling business that has partnered with seed providers. To maintain the continuity of the seeds producer that have been formed, monitoring of their business developments on a regular basis was needed. In addition, in the future, it is necessary to provide access to seed programs that are assisted as one of the seed providers and provide physical infrastructure support so that the speed and volume of seed production can increase.
