Abstract: Many human cancers develop as a result of exposure to risk factors related to the environment and ways of life. The aim of this study was to estimate attributable fractions of 25 types of cancers resulting from exposure to modifiable risk factors in Brazil. The prevalence of exposure to selected risk factors among adults was obtained from population-based surveys conducted from 2000 to 2008. Risk estimates were based on data drawn from meta-analyses or large, high quality studies. Population-attributable fract… Show more

“…However, it suggests that colonoscopy is the most effective screening method to prevent CRC deaths (34) . Also, despite of dietary factors evaluated in population attributable fraction (35) , there is a growing tendency to consider the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and CRC (36) . Since it is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases and the association with the incidence of this type of cancer, the importance of the early diagnosis of oncogenic HPV infection is now discussed for prevention of new cases.…”

“…The most remarkable difference was detected in Goiânia (90% attributable to tobacco, and 62%, to alcohol). In a study carried out in Brazil to estimate the PAF of modifiable risk factors for 25 types of cancer, it was observed that highest PAF was related to smoking, followed by infections, low intake of fruits and vegetables, lack of physical activities, overweight and obesity 19 . The differences in HNC fractions attributable to tobacco and alcohol found in this study are similar to those observed for Latin America 5 , however, higher than the ones detected in other regions of the world 10,23,[27][28][29] , and may be the expression of local patterns and habits of tobacco and alcohol consumption in the cities analyzed in the Center-West, Southeast and South regions.…”

“…Even though the frequency of smoking is decreasing in the population, the highest fraction of cancer in Brazil, in general, is attributed to tobacco. In a study conducted to estimate the population attributable fraction (PAF) of modifiable risk factors for 25 types of cancer, there were PAFs of 95.0 and 80.2% for oral cavity and larynx cancer, respectively 19 , for the Brazilian population as a whole.…”

“…ladas, como a adoção do estilo de vida saudável, o autoconhecimento corporal, o controle de peso, a redução do consumo de álcool e de tabaco [2][3][4] . Já as medidas específicas para o controle do este tumor focam-se no emprego de ações de detecção precoce e na oferta de tratamento oportuno 1,[4][5][6] .…”
