ABSTRACT Ethnopharmacological relevanceTraditional knowledge about medicinal plants from a poorly studied region, the High Atlas in Morocco, is reported here for the first time; this permits consideration of efficacy and safety of current practices whilst highlighting species previously not known to have traditional medicinal use. Aim of the studyOur study aims to document local medicinal plant knowledge among Tashelhit speaking communities through ethnobotanical survey, identifying preferred species and new medicinal plant citations and illuminating the relationship between emic and etic ailment classifications. Materials and methodsEthnobotanical data were collected using standard methods and with prior informed consent obtained before all interactions, data were characterized using descriptive indices and medicinal plants and healing strategies relevant to local livelihoods were identified.Results 151 vernacular names corresponding to 159 botanical species were found to be used to treat 36 folk ailments grouped in 14 biomedical use categories. Thirty-five (22%) are new medicinal plant records in Morocco, and 26 described as used for the first time anywhere. Fidelity levels (FL) revealed low specificity in plant use, particularly for the most commonly reported plants. Most plants are used in mixtures. Plant use is driven by local concepts of disease, including "hot" and "cold" classification and beliefs in supernatural forces. 2 ConclusionLocal medicinal plant knowledge is rich in the High Atlas, where local populations still rely on medicinal plants for healthcare. We found experimental evidence of safe and effective use of medicinal plants in the High Atlas; but we highlight the use of eight poisonous species.

Medicinal plants, as a type of non-timber forest products (NTFP), have been expected to support the livelihoods of people globally, especially in rural and forest areas in developing nations. As medicinal plants occupy a unique position, with direct repercussions for people's health and as a potential income resource, it is necessary to take the interaction with, and influence of, modern medicine into account when they are considered as a NTFP. This study pursued the influence of the health care service on medicinal plant utilization in mestizo and indigenous villages near secondary population agglomerations in the Peruvian Amazon. The study found some influence of the health care services on medicinal plant use in the study site, indicating that 1) medicinal plants are not necessarily a highly dependable approach for health care, 2) there are insufficient conditions for the development of a commercial market for medicinal plants, and 3) mestizo and indigenous households have similar health care utilization behaviours, although indigenous households are more affected by modern medicine, especially health care insurance, than the mestizo households. The health care service is an important factor for medicinal plant use for both health and livelihood. Without considering this factor, the potential of medicinal plants as NTFP cannot be fully understood.

A regulamentação de estratégias de acesso, uso e divisão de be- nefícios em pesquisas tecnocientíficas com uso de conhecimen- to tradicional é tema de inúmeros debates mundo afora. Com o objetivo de contribuir com os estudos sociológicos sobre a ques- tão, este artigo analisa duas estratégias de pesquisa e desenvolvi- mento adotadas pelo campo científico para acessar, usar e dividir benefícios com comunidades tradicionais/étnicas. Os modelos de pesquisa horizontal e pesquisa vertical destacam os dilemas, conflitos e virtudes observados em atividades de pesquisas vol- tadas para a produção de capital científico puro e para a inova- ção tecnológica no campo farmacêutico. O objetivo deste artigo é contribuir com os estudos sobre as diferentes estratégias para a divisão justa e equitativa de benefícios em pesquisas intercul- turais realizadas no compartilhamento de informações e conhe- cimentos e utilização de mecanismos de propriedade privada.
